Description:
N.p.: National Screen Service, 1950. Collection of 89 vintage placards, circa 1950s, used as sample advertising slides (i.e., dummies) at drive-in theaters by National Screen Service regional salesmen. The placards would have then been photographed, sometimes illustrated or otherwise manipulated, then turned into slides to be projected on the drive-in movie screen. National Screen Service (NSS) controlled the distribution of theatrical advertising materials from the 1940s through the 1980s, most famously producing and distributing film posters, but also film still photographs and publicity material, and (as shown here) both regional and national advertising goods. The advertisements represent a wide variety of services and retail locations: sporting goods, shoe salesmen, car dealerships, florists, heating and air conditioning repair, gas stations, exotic dancers, and many more, ranging in location throughout Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois. Two placards also feature negative photographs… Read More

N.p.: N.p., 1940. Archive of 26 vintage photographs of mid-Atlantic roadside alert signs with advertisements, circa 1930s-1940s. Includes 21 double weight photographs and two matte-finish. Three photographs bear annotations in manuscript pencil on the verso. The collection contains thirteen photographs of alert signs advertising Champion spark plugs, seven advertising hotels (the Biltmore in Dayton, Hotel Sinton in Cincinnati, Hotel Adelphia in Philadelphia, Hotel Schenley in Pittsburgh, Hotel Webster Hall in Detroit, and two for Hotel Elizabeth Carteret in Elizabeth, New Jersey), three advertising radio stations (WJW and WADC of Akron and WSPD of Toledo), and three for various automobile and travel-related businesses. Ostensibly designed to warn drivers of forthcoming crossroads, turns, or junctions, the roadside alert signs presented here were perhaps more effective for the prime advertising real estate of their plinths. The circular "alert" section, containing text or symbols of approaching… Read More

Johnson company was founded in 1886 in Racine, Wisconsin, primarily selling wax for parquet flooring. The company would expand throughout the twentieth century, eventually departing from wax-based products in 1955 with the launch of Raid insecticide, accompanied over the next three years by a new suite of products, including Off! insect repellent, Pledge cleaner, and Glade air freshener. The company continues to operate today as one of the oldest family-owned businesses in the United States. The stickers on offer here were likely created for distributors' use, and advertise a wide variety of Johnson products, including Agree shampoo and conditioner, Glade aerosol spray, Edge shaving gel, Off! insect repellent, Shout laundry spray, Befresh toilet bowl deodorizer, Scrunge sponge, and more. Portable projectors were available in both silent and sound formats, and in the 1930s were still marketed primarily as an educational tool for institutional use, for schools, prisons, hospitals, churches, travel agencies, and the like. Projector technology would rapidly accelerate throughout the ensuing decades, reaching a peak in the postwar period, when personal projector use would hit an all-time high. Included in the archive is a 22 page sales brochure, photo-illustrated throughout, containing in-depth descriptions of the projectors offered for sale by International Projector Corporation in 1931, as well as several pages describing the projectors' utility in a variety of… Read More

Description:
France: Various Publishers, 1959. Collection of thirteen French publisher and distributor catalogs, including a small book-shaped calendar, advertising toys, novelties, and home goods. Most are full-color folding brochures. From the archives of Maryse Martres, in original manila envelope with her name on the front in manuscript ink. Martres (Martin) was a prolific French actress who was later involved in press relations in France, worked for Cinedis, the notable film agency, and managed much of the company's press and advertising responsibilities. Present in the collection are several checklists on Cinedis parchment, noting members of the agency and their children, and ideas for toy gifts for each child. Martres was in charge, no doubt, of the Christmas gift giving at Cinedis as well. Several negative film strips from a holiday party are also included. The collection offers a glimpse inside France's mid-century publishing, distributing, and advertising scheme, not unlike the lavish color… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1986. Two vintage product illustrations for toy racetracks made by German manufacturer Darda, both by illustrator Ken Zaruba, circa 1986. The two track illustrations presented here are variants on Darda's track sets, "Raketenbaum" (Rocket Car) (with an annotation on the overlay of "Rollercoaster Roadway"), and "Bahn mit Tankstille" (Track with Gas Station), both manufactured in 1986, each signed by the artist, one with a Zaruba Studio label on the overlay. Popular in Europe and the US during the 1980s and 1990s, the Darda motor was invented by Helmut Darda in 1970, and feature a unique pullback motor, winded by rolling the cars back and forth, which then propel the cars to speeds up to 30 mph, requiring no batteries or electricity. While the cars can be run on any surface, Darda designed brightly colored tracks for the vehicles, incorporating loops, jumps, curves, and crossovers, which can be combined to create elaborate circuits, which run both vertically and horizontally.
