Description:
London: Watts & Co., 1947. Hardcover. See Description. Second impression. 8vo. pp. x, 202. With 24 photo plates. Bound in red publisher’s cloth. Binding is clean and tight. Interior pages are clean. The dust jacket contains wear and chipping to the extremities; a large 35 x 41 mm piece is chipped away fr0m the upper inner corner of the front wrapper, almost completely obscuring the word "myth." The top 23 mm of the jacket spine is also chipped, obscuring the lettering. The author tries to reveal the myths and religious backgrounds to folk-dances, nursery-rhymes, and children’s games. Included are chapters on "the religious origin of primitive games", "dancing and primitive religion", "vestiges of ritual in folk-dancing", "traces of myth and ritual in popular rhyme," etc. Lewis Spence was a British occultist and popular folklore writer.
