"...a most interesting description of Cape Town . which says, 'The habitations . so low and so quaint, with their gables to the streets, covered with whitewash and adornded with venetians, each with its stoop or porch before it after the manner of the old Knickerbockers, seemed exceedingly odd. The small window-panes, and singular sign-boards, and the absence of shop windows, had a singular effect.'" (Mendelssohn, p.119).
