Description:
Donington: Shaun Tyas, 2003. Book. Fine. Hardcover. New Edition. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. A fine new copy. A late fifteenth century illustrated life of Richard Beauchamp. Fully illustrated it is an essential tool for art historians and students of medieval history. 179 pp A superb reproduction of this glorious manuscript. This book is a facsimile of a beautiful medieval manuscript, The Beauchamp Pageant, which tells the story of the life of Richard, Earl of Warwick (1382-1439). It is not one of those gaudy brightly-coloured manuscripts, but one composed of delicate line drawings, now appearing in a sepia tint. This is the only modern facsimile of the manuscript and the only one to print the pages in full colour throughout, using the high-quality transparencies provided for the purpose by the British Library. The pages are printed life-size, hence the large format of the book, and each illustration is remarkable for its vibrant details, showing costume, military technology, ships and… Read More

Description:
Donington: Shaun Tyas, 2021. Book. Fine. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A fine, new copy bound in cloth and sewn in sections. The Founders' Book records the history of Tewkesbury Abbey in Gloucestershire, from the transfer of abbey status from Cranborne to Tewkesbury by Robert Fitzhamon in 1102 to the time of the book's compilation in the late fifteenth century. The Chronicle also records some details of Tewkesbury's earlier history from Anglo-Saxon times, such as details of the eighth-century Mercian founders, here called 'Oddo and Doddo', and gifts from the West Saxon king, Beorhtric (786-802). This magnificent full-size colour facsimile of the manuscript in the Bodleian Library occupies pages 137 to 209 of the book, preceded by an introduction by the editor Julian Luxford, an essay on the heraldry in the manuscript by Adrian Ailes, and a full edition of the Latin text with facing English translation by Susan Powell. .

Donington: Shaun Tyas, 2018. Book. Fine. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 704 pages plus 16 pages of colour plates on art paper, sewn in sections. The Burgundian author Jean de Wavrin (c.1400-c.1477) has been known to historians for a long time but his work is usually considered derivative and of little importance. Closer study reveals that he had an interesting career, first serving in the Anglo-Burgundian army, then marrying a rich widow and settling down to a quieter life in Lille, where he composed his vast compilation of the histories of England. At the same time he became a supplier of romances to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, and an avid collector of all kinds of books himself. A very unusual draughtsman, whom he almost uniquely patronised, was later named 'The Wavrin master' by art historians. Wavrin's life as a soldier and civilian, ambassador and courtier, is here presented as fully as possible and put into context. His library and… Read More

Donington: Richard III and Yorkist History Trust in association with Shaun Tyas, 2021. Book. Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A fine new copy. 540pp. This book is a study of the prime duty of an English king in the late fifteenth century, the defence of his realm and people. Studying an island realm with a long coastal border, and a dangerous northern border with Scotland, demands a detailed gazetteer to examine the families and localities that lived there. It was originally intended to concentrate on the reign of Richard III (1483-85), but his complex and successful negotiations with James III of Scotland, concluded in 1484, necessitated that the book start in 1471, when Edward IV had first chosen his younger brother to lead the defence and administration of this border. Richard's administrative centre was to be the north-west, the county of Cumberland, but his overall authority spread into the east and north. This tied in with his experience on the… Read More

Description:
Donington: Yorkist History Trust, in association with Shaun Tyas, 2024. Book. Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A fine new copy. The Lordship of Middleham was a medieval administrative district in Wensleydale (North Yorkshire), centred on the castle there. Two sets of estate accounts survive from the Yorkist period, the first at a time when the castle was held by the earl of Warwick, the second set when it was the northern base of Richard, duke of Gloucester, who later became King Richard III. The extraordinary detail of the accounts reveal much of estate life, the names of tenants and the considerable income the lord enjoyed from the estate. The introduction by Gladys Mary Coles was written in 1961 but has never before been published, though the typescript (an MA thesis from the University of Liverpool) has long been respected and often cited by historians. Jonathan Mackman has translated the manuscripts for this edition, the whole overseen by the editors… Read More
