"This book contains all the stories I have written that are not included in East and West. The tales in that collection were of about the same length and written on the same scale and so it seemed convenient to publish them together in a single volume. Most of the stories which I have now gathered together are very much shorter. Some were written many years ago, Others more recently. They appeared in magazines and were afterwards issued in book form. To the first lot I gave the title of Cosmopolitan Magazine, and except for Ray Long, who was then its editor, would never have been written....: - Preface from The Complete Short Stories of W. The Republic

By Plato (Translated Into English By B. Jowett, M.A.)

This book is in good condition. There is significant wear on the front, back, spine, and edges of the cover boards. The corners of the book are bumped, and there is a large ink stain on the back cover board. The previous owners name is written on the inside of the front cover board and there are markings on the front end page and the title page. The pages are yellowed and tanned. "The Republic is undoubtedly one of Plato's masterworks and one of the most influential and widely read books in the history of philosophy. It is also devilishly difficult to truly understand. There are any number of reasons for this, but one of them is the sheer breadth of topics and issues that Plato introduces over the course of the dialogue. Readers must make sense not only of those issues in their own right but they must also understand them in relation to the larger themes and arguments of the work. This is, to be sure, a daunting task, particularly for readers who are approaching the dialogue for the first time. In his book, Gerasimos Santas aims to help the reader better understand The Republic by focusing on its central argument -- that we are better off just than unjust. He does this, though, through a particular methodological lens. In his preface, Santas states that The Republic is "a book that is always contemporary," and this sentiment carries through in the focus and method of his book. Santas divides his attention between offering a text-based exegesis of Plato's arguments regarding justice and critically engaging in the text in a way that is highly informed by the works of other, more contemporary, thinkers. The result is a book that gives its readers some grounding in the basic threads of argument in The Republic while also encouraging and empowering them to engage the text and see the arguments as making philosophical claims that are still relevant and worthy of our consideration today. Indeed it is this last thing -- Santas's critical engagement with the text and emphasis on getting the reader involved in its debates and arguments -- that is the real strength of this book...." - Understanding Plato's Republic Reviewed by Michelle Jenkins, Whitman College

And is it simply the nature of human beings that genius should be strange, secretive, and even frightening, whereas talent is lucid, accessible and likeable? The face of Robert Browning gives nothing away - handsome and polished, it offers no hold to those who would pry into the soul behind. Its metallic mirror gives us back ourselves. But the face of Elizabeth Barrett Browning speaks openly of her sufferings - of ill health, of an iron father, of miscarriages - yet speaking in the accents of courage and good sense. Any woman of sensitivity and talent can imagine herself as Elizabeth, in the hope that she might get as much as did did Elizabeth out of a life which sometimes seemed to offer so little...." - Introduction from The Brownings: Letters And Poetry

It lies at the heart of so many discussions between churches, as well as of some of the most controversial and sensitive matters which face us all. "All the elements in this book concerning prejudice, discrimination, war, violence, distorted interpretations of religious texts, physical and mental abuse, poverty, and disease fall disproportionately on women and girls. I saw the ravages of racial prejudice as I grew up in the Deep South, when for a century the U.S. Supreme Court and all other political and social authorities accepted the premise that black people were, in some basic ways, inferior to white people. Even those in the dominant class who disagreed with the presumption remained relatively quiet and enjoyed the benefits of the prevailing system. Carefully selected Holy Scriptures were quoted to justify this discrimination in the name of God...." - Introduction from A Call To Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power

The edges of the cover boards are worn and the corners are bumped. The pages are yellowed and tanned but free of any markings. "The texts gathered together in the present volume provide a cross-section of the religious life of the eighth century difficult to parallel elsewhere. Two biographies of the archbishops who initiated the missionary enterprise on the Continent show how their labours transformed the face of Europe within the space of a single generation, whilst the life of one of their disciples illustrates how their work was continued. The correspondence of St. Boniface bring into closer focus the kind of difficulties they encountered and introduces us into the homely atmosphere of their friends, relatives, and well-wishers. Two further biographies, one of the abbot of the first monastery to be founded in Germany, the other of the abbess Leoba, give an illuminating picture of the beginnings of monastic life amidst barbarian surroundings and throw light on the characters and attainments of the men and women who embarked on this hazardous adventure. Finally, the description of Willibald's travels through Italy, the Greek archipelago and the Holy Land show the devotion, allied to a spirit of adventure, which animated these early pilgrims and missionaries. Bishops, priests, monks, nuns and simple clerics flit through these pages and tell us their unvarnished tale, which, slight though it may be in certain cases, deeply impresses by contrast with the grim background against which it unfold...." - General Introduction from The Anglo-Saxon Missionaries in Germany

It is obvious that this study cannot be exhaustive; nevertheless, the subjects of our analysis have not been chosen at random, but have been selected for special reasons." - Chapter 1: Definitions And Basic Principles, Liberty Or Equality: The Challenge of our Time

Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Special Award "I have come to think that the true likeness of Flannery O'Connor will be painted by herself, a self-portrait in words, to be found in her letters . . . There she stands, a phoenix risen from her own words: calm, slow, funny, courteous, both modest and very sure of herself, intense, sharply penetrating, devout but never pietistic, downright, occasionally fierce, and honest in a way that restores honor to the word."—Sally Fitzgerald, from the Introduction
