In 1607, a certain Madame de Charmoisy, whose husband was an ambassador of the Duke of Savoy and a relative of St. Francis, visited Annecy to attend a lawsuit, and while there placed herself under his spiritual direction. When she returned to court he gave her a series of written spiritual instructions, which he had begun to compile as early as 1602, for the guidance of persons seeking to live a devout life in the world. These instructions were shown to Pere Jean Fourier of the Society of Jesus, who considered them 'a treasure of devotion', and so valuable that he strongly urged St. Francis to have them printed, with the result that the first edition, edited by St. Francis, was issued in 1609 under the title Introduction a la Vie Devote...." ""When answering my letters, requesting information about their communities, several Superiors have asked why, as a Roman Catholic, I should be sufficiently interested in Anglican religious orders to think it worth while to write a book about them! Very much the same surprise has been expressed by some of my co-religionists when I mentioned the work on which I was engaged. So I explained that the subject is one which has attracted me for nearly half a century, ever since I was a youth of fifteen and chanced to pick up a copy of The Life of Father Ignatius, O.S.B., The Monk of Llanthony by the Baroness de Bertouch (London, 1940) - a strange introduction to the monastic life! Since then this interest has grown, rather than decreased. It was revived definitely about fifteen years ago when I added a long introductory chapter, dealing with religious communities in the Church of England, to The Benedictines of Caldey (London, 1940). Then one day it struck me that it was high time that somebody wrote an up-to-date history of Anglican religious communities...." - Foreword from The Call of the Cloister: Religious Communities And Kindred Bodies In The Anglican Communion

"Obtaining information about America's religious groups can be difficult, providing it to others is a king-sized undertaking. For one thing, there are so many. For another, finding a way to make contact with them to gather facts and figures, especially from the smaller, less highly organized ones, can be a mystery. And then there is the question of which ones to include in a reference book of this kind. Finally, classifying them - that is, under which heading, if any, to place them and how to list them by title - sometimes requires a judgement call or even a bold venture...." - Preface to the Eighth Edition from Handbook of Denominations in the United States

For whereas it was the expectation of many, who wished not well unto our Scion That upon the setting of that bright Occidental Star, Queen Elizabeth of most happy memory, some thick and palpable clouds of darkness would so have overshadowed this Land, that men should have been in doubt which way they were to walk; and that it should hardly be known, who was to direct the unsettled State; the appearance of Your Majesty, as of the Sun in his strength, instantly dispelled those supposed and surmised mists, and gave unto all that were well affected exceeding cause of comfort; especially when we beheld the Government established in Your Highness, and Your hopeful Seed, by an undoubted Title, and this also accompanied with peace and tranquillity at home and abroad...." - The Holy Bible: Containing The Old And The New Testaments And The Apocrypha Translated Out Of The Original Tongues: And With The Former Translations Diligently Compared And Revised By His Majesty's Special Command

The edges of the cover boards are worn and the corners are bumped. The pages are yellowed and tanned but free of any markings. "The texts gathered together in the present volume provide a cross-section of the religious life of the eighth century difficult to parallel elsewhere. Two biographies of the archbishops who initiated the missionary enterprise on the Continent show how their labours transformed the face of Europe within the space of a single generation, whilst the life of one of their disciples illustrates how their work was continued. The correspondence of St. Boniface bring into closer focus the kind of difficulties they encountered and introduces us into the homely atmosphere of their friends, relatives, and well-wishers. Two further biographies, one of the abbot of the first monastery to be founded in Germany, the other of the abbess Leoba, give an illuminating picture of the beginnings of monastic life amidst barbarian surroundings and throw light on the characters and attainments of the men and women who embarked on this hazardous adventure. Finally, the description of Willibald's travels through Italy, the Greek archipelago and the Holy Land show the devotion, allied to a spirit of adventure, which animated these early pilgrims and missionaries. Bishops, priests, monks, nuns and simple clerics flit through these pages and tell us their unvarnished tale, which, slight though it may be in certain cases, deeply impresses by contrast with the grim background against which it unfold...." - General Introduction from The Anglo-Saxon Missionaries in Germany

"In May 1946 the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland received an overture from the Presbytery of Stirling and Dunblane, where it had been initiated by the Reverend G.S. Hendry, recommending that a translation of the Bible be made in the language of the present day, inasmuch as the language of the Authorized Version, already archaic when it was made, had now become even more definitely archaic and less generally understood. The General Assembly resolved to make an approach to other Churches, and, as a result, delegates of the Church of England, the Church of Scotland, and the Methodist, Baptist, and Congregational Churches me t in conference in October. They recommended that the work should be undertaken; that a completely new translation should be made, rather than a revision, such as had earlier been contemplated by the University Presses of Oxford and Cambridge; and that the translators should be free to employ a contemporary idiom rather than reproduce the traditional 'biblical' English...." - Preface To The New English Bible

"The Church of England has a rich devotional literature in which the various need of the soul are met by teachers with different experience and different emphasis but who are, none the less, unite by a common tradition. Its value for the present is beyond question; for the past, it not only indicates the kind of spiritual training which underlay the outward observances of religion, but provides if not a history of those ideas which determined the day to day conduct of each man with his neighbor. the obvious purpose of those who wrote these books was to escalate and direct the deepest thoughts and feelings of all whom they could persuade to accept their guidance. It was their aim to make the conscience swift to discern between right and wrong and to make the will obedient to the conscience. It is to the conscience in the lat resort that all great movements of history appeal. Changes in social attitudes reflect changes which have already taken place in the moral standards of the people. And so the study of the classical works of English devotion may be of value not only to those who are interested strictly in religious affairs, but to all those who would understand the wide and deep currents of the nation's life...." - Preface from Anglican Devotion: Studies in the Spiritual Life of the Church of England between the Reformation and the Oxford Movement

Plain Reasons Against Joining The Church Of Rome

By Richard Frederick Littledale

This book is an antique and is in good condition. The previous owner's stamps and mark are on the inside front cover. The inside pages are tanning. This book makes no attempt to cover the whole area of the controversy to which it relates. Indeed, as Roman disputants are perpetually shifting their ground, instead of always appealing, as Anglicans do, to the Word of God and the historical witness of the Church Catholic, it would be practically impossible to do that. It is confined strictly to a few practical questions which affect all members of the Church, laity and clergy alike, and omits not only all purely speculative discussions, interesting to theologians alone, but also all matters of which it can fairly be said that Rome and England have any common ground of agreement, however they may differ in details, or in mode of expression. II. It is defensive, and not aggressive in design, and is therefore not addressed to born Roman Catholics, nor does it undertake to measure their responsibility, or to point out their duty. To their own Master they stand or fall. But it is addressed to those who have seceded, or are tempted to secession, from the Church of England to the Roman Communion; that they may see what is the true nature of the accountability with which they are charging themselves in following their own private judgment, rather than the providential order of God; and to remind them of that saying of the Master: "No man, also, having drunk old wine, straightway desireth new; for he saith, The old is better" (St. Luke v. 39).... - Plain Reasons Against Joining The Church Of Rome
