Rome Sweet Home

By Scott and Kimberly Hahn

This book is in very good condition. The cover pages have minimal wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the book. The pages are white, crisp, and clear of any markings. "I was the youngest of three Hahn children born to Molly Lou and Fred Hahn. Baptized a Presbyterian, I was raised in a nominal Protestant home. Church and religion played a small role in my life and for my family, and then mostly for social reasons rather than any deep convictions. I recall the last time I ever attended our family's church. The minister was preaching all about his doubts regarding the Virgin Birth of Jesus and his bodily Resurrection. I just stood up in the middle of the sermon and walked out. I remember thinking, I'm not sure what I believe, but at least I'm honest enough not to stand up and attack the things I'm supposed to teach. I also wondered, why doesn't the man just leave his ministry in the Presbyterian Church and go wherever his beliefs are held? Little did I know, that I had witnessed a portent of my own future...." - Chapter One from Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism

The proper chants are printed in full so that they can be chanted or recited. The community should listen to the official proclamation of the message by the celebrant or reader and the prayers of the priest. A helpful but short commentary on the theme is often arbitrary since many celebrations just do not have a central idea. Whereas some of the readings were deliberately combined to develop a theme, other arrangements of Epistles and Gospels have been so shuffled through the centuries that there is little natural relationship between them. The commentary given here is a possible way of interpreting the readings around one point of meditation and instruction...." - Introduction To The Proper Section from Peoples Mass Book

By Richard Rohr

This book is in very good condition. There is no wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards. There is no bumping or fraying, and the pages are clear of markings. The pages are white, crisp and clear. "As I began to say in the Introduction, the task of the first half of life is to create a proper container for one's life and answer the first essential questions: "What makes me significant?" "How can I support myself?" and "Who will go with me?" The task of the second half of life is, quite simply, to find the actual contents that this container was meant to hold and deliver. As Mary Oliver puts it, "What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" In other words, the container is not an end in itself, but exists for the sake of your deeper and fullest life, which you largely do not know about yourself! Far too many people just keep doing repair work on the container itself and never "throw their nets into the deep" (John 21:6) to bring in the huge catch that awaits them...." - Chapter One from Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life

"Since the promulgation of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council, all of us have experienced the first steps toward a renewal of the liturgy of the Church. We see clearly now that this liturgical renewal cannot be a matter of texts and rubrics only; the heart of this renewal is prayer. And the key to renewing the prayer of the Sunday assembly is rekindling a love for and practice of prayer in the hearts of those who make up the Church. Prayer must happen in the 'little churches' - the households, the families - if the Sunday assembly is to become a community of prayer. The Council taught that the liturgy 'is the primary and indispensable source from which the faithful are to derive the true Christian spirit' (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 14) How can that spirit come to fill and give shape to our lives unless it is there in the prayers of individuals and families?..." - Foreword from Catholic Household Blessings And Prayers

"In the long history of the worshiping Christian community, or at least of the Latin-speaking section of it, the sixteenth century witnessed the most momentous changes since the days of Gregory the Great in the sixth century. The intervening millennium, in fact, may be regarded in the perspectives set by the Second Vatican Council as a liturgical parenthesis, defined by the delayed indigenization of worship on the north European mission field. There were understandable reasons for this delayed indigenization which need not concern us here. Some of these reasons also help to explain the suppression of regional rites, such as the Gallican and Mozarabic, and the enforced standardization on the Roman pattern. The effect, in any case, was that a form of worship, essentially crystallized for Latin-speaking peoples by the time of Gregory, was imposed unchanged on the northern European peoples. For a thousand years they must worship through a liturgy unintelligible to most of them. The form of this service, deprived of inner coherence and meaning, suffered over the centuries various distortions, omissions, telescoping's, and adventitious additions. Finally, in the religious and moral explosion of the sixteenth century, a major section of the mission churches of northern Europe rebelled. They translated and adapted the Latin liturgy for their own worship in defiance of the Roman hierarchy...." - Chapter One from Corporate Worship in The Reformed Tradition

The period in view is nearly that which has been named the Patristic. It has also been denominated, but not perhaps very happily, the period of Christianity under its Antique and Classical form.... - Author's Preface from The Ancient Catholic Church

The Great Church In Captivity

By Steven Runciman

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the font, back, edges, and spine of the cover. There is also some bumping, and fraying on the cover. The pages are white and clear of any markings. "Of all the roads that a historian may tread none passes through more difficult country than that of religious history. To a believer religious truths are eternal. The doctrine that he preaches and accepts gives expression to their everlasting validity. To him the historian who seeks to discover and explain why the doctrine should have appeared at a particular moment of time seems guilty of unwarranted determinism. But Revealed Religion cannot escape from the bounds of time; for the Revelation must have occurred at a particular moment. The Christian religion, above all others, is concerned with the relations of time and eternity. Its central doctrine, the Incarnation, is not only an eternal truth but an event in history; it is a bridge between the temporal and the eternal. The institutions of Christianity, however divine their inspiration, have been ordered and governed by men and are affected by the temporal processes to which man is subject. The articles of faith, whatever their transcendental validity, have been spread around the world by the agency of man, their transmission has been affected by changes in worldly circumstances and outlook. It may be that man is continually refreshed by the messages from on high. It may be that there is a divine ordering of history. But the historian himself is mortal, restricted by the limitations of temporality; and he must have the modesty to know his limitations. His business is to tell the story and to make it, as best as he can, intelligible to humanity...." - Preface from The Great Church In Captivity: A Study Of The Patriarchate Of Constantinople From The Eve Of The Turkish Conquest To The Greek War Of Independence

The previous owners have written, and dated the inside cover boards, and affixed an ownership stamp. The pages are yellowing and tanning, but the pages are clear of any markings. "This book is an essay on the Church and her message, particularly as embodied in the actual order of the Church and her liturgy, in relation to the problem of belief and a true social life in the confused world of today. It is addressed not only to those who are Christians, but also to those many others who look in from time to time through the church door, and wonder whether some day they will come in. That the Church, being such as she is, should inspire a certain repulsion is intelligible enough. But she also exercises an attraction; and here I feel sure that it is not least the sacred actions and words of Christian worship that make to very many a deep appeal, and one that is not only or even chiefly aesthetic: that even when sermons are tiresome and hymns banal, the drama of the eucharistic rite and the words of the Prayer Book speak to them of a real relation of man to the Eternal, and inspire a hope that amid the disintegration of modern life, the confusion of belief, and the falling in ruins of the towers of Babel that human idealism tries to build, they may yet come to find that this sacred symbolism is an expression of reality, of the things which cannot be shaken, of the City which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God...." - Preface from Liturgy And Society

"In 1963 a bishop of the Episcopal Church laid hands on my head and said, "Take thou authority to execute the Office of a Deacon in the Church of God committed unto thee; In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Ghost, Amen." Three days later began my month's supply ministry in a parish whose rector was on vacation. Except for a Sunday supply priest, I was quite on my own for all practical purposes. As a matter of curiosity, I took up the Book of Common Prayer to see again what specific functions I had as a deacon; academic theory and ordination promises had suddenly acquired a jolting dimension of existential reality! Finding listed some tasks I felt unprepared for, and some that perhaps were not to be done, I ministered as I could for the four weeks...." - Preface from The Diaconate Now

"On November 6th 1661, a Sunday, as she sat down to her midday meal, the Queen of Spain, Dona Mariana, felt certain symptoms which she had been expecting for two anxious days. She left the table and hurried to the Tower Chamber, which had been prepared for the event. The royal collection of sacred relics occupied every corner, the three thorns from Christ's crown, one of the nails from His Cross, a fragment of the Cross itself, a piece of Our Lady's mantel, and dozens of treasures only less rare. To these had been added other very special ones, known to be helpful on such occasions. Father Juan de Ojalvo had hurried to Madrid with the walking-stick of Santo Domingo, Abbot of Silos; and from San Juan de Ortega's convent, his miraculous belt had been brought by the Prior himself...." - Chapter One from Carlos:The King Who Would Not Die

"The biographical writings in this volume are the primary sources for the Lives of the five Western Fathers with whom they deal. If the purpose of this series were to convert the contemporary pictures of the makers of Christendom into biographies of the modern type, each of them would have to be pulled to pieces, supplemented from other sources, interpreted in the light of later knowledge and reconstructed on quite a different plan. Since in actual fact the purpose of the series is largely to enable the twentieth-century reader to see these makers of Christendom as far as possible as their contemporaries saw them, it would seem that the task of the translator is to preserve as far as possible the feeling and manner of the original, and that the task of the editor is far as possible to put the twentieth-century reader in possession of the knowledge of the setting of the Lives which the contemporary readers had and which the writers took for granted...." - Preface from The Western Fathers: Being The Lives of Martin of Tours, Ambrose, Augustine of Hippo, Hororatus of Aries
