Inspired Halifax - the Art of Dusan Kadlec

By Dusan Kadlec; Cynthia Mahoney

Halifax, NS: Nimbus Publishing Limited. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2003. First Edition. Hardcover. 1551094606 . Excellent condition, hardcover and jacket fine. Oblong book - 10 x 11 in. Hardcover clean and unmarked. Jacket has no tears, light scuffing/light scratches to rear. Beautifully illustrated in colour. ; Oblong 4to 9" - 11" tall; 90 pages; In the time honoured tradition of the Old Masters, Dusan Kadlec’s paintings are both simple and profound. His many paintings transcend being simply illustrative or representational art. Instead his art evokes within us a sense of nostalgia for bygone Halifax. This feeling for 19th century Halifax is not merely the consequence of his chosen subject matter, but rather a very conscious effort by the artist to romantically portray the mood, the atmosphere, the very essence of a place and time. Through his unique and immediately recognizable style, his old world lighting, texture, and obvious attention to every detail, Dusan Kadlec manages to convey the viewer to another era. This is one of the things that make his work so broadly and genuinely appealing. He not only presents us with an insight into our past; he somehow leaves us with the impression that he has actually been there and perhaps more importantly that in some way he has managed to take us there for a moment as well. Dusan Kadlec’s compassionate studies, meticulously researched through extensive archival sources, have become highly sought after and are now considered by numerous collectors around the world to be the standard to attain in this type of painting. His vivid canvases of nineteenth and early twentieth century life in historic Halifax continue to win an ever-increasing number of fans. The old port city’s urban and maritime heritage has been preserved for future generations. (690-0514) .

U. K.: Paper Tiger / Dragon's World. Near Fine. 1989. First Edition. Softcover. 1850280959 . Very nice condition. Paper Tiger/Dragon's World, U. K. First edition, 1989, same ISBN. Pages are clean and intact, no markings. Cover has slight scuffing and slight wear at corners. Profusely illustrated in colour and b/w. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 134 pages; His artwork has graced the timeless novels of Jules Verne (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) , H. G. Wells (War of the Worlds) , Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (The Lost World) , J. R. R. Tolkien (The Silmarillion and Lord of the Rings) , and Frank Herbert (Dune). But whether he's illustrating a children's classic like Alice in Wonderland, a magazine, an album sleeve, or a poster, Rodney Matthews' images explode with fantasy and even joy. Few dark visions appear here; instead there are color, movement, and a host of eccentric, whimsical, and personality-filled figures to please the eye. The richly detailed paintings and preliminary sketches gathered here include The Hop, featuring an irresistible group of jazzy musical insects; the subtly glowing book cover for C. S. Lewis's The Silver Chair; and the fanciful, slightly disturbing The Spud Snuzzler--which pictures a bizarre creature who shoots high-velocity potatoes through his trumpetlike nose. (735) .

Legacies - Collecting America's History At the Smithsonian

By Steven Lubar & Kathleen M. Kendrick

Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press. Very Good in Very Good+ dust jacket. 2001. First Edition. Hardcover. 156098886x . Ex-library book, but this oversize hardcover is still in very nice condition. Laminated jacket and usual ex-lib type of markings. Pages are clean and intact. Laminate on jacket has some scuffing and a little wear along spine. Hardcover has light wear to bottom corners. Profusely illustrated in colour. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 256 pages; The Smithsonian Institution has been America's museum since 1846. What do its vast collections -- from the ruby slippers to a piece of Plymouth Rock, first ladies' gowns to patchwork quilts, a Model T Ford to a customized Ford LTD low rider -- tell Americans about themselves? In this lavishly illustrated guide to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, Steven Lubar and Kathleen M. Kendrick tell the stories behind more than 250 of the museum's treasures, many of them never before photographed for publication. These stories not only reveal what America as a nation has decided to save and why but also speak to changing visions of national identity. As the authors demonstrate, views of history change over time, methods of historical investigation evolve and improve, and Americas' understand of the past matures. Shifts in focus and attitude lie at the hearth of Legacies, which is organized around four concepts of what a national museum of history can be: a treasure house, a shrine to the famous, a palace of progress, and a mirror of the nation. Thus, the museum collects cherished or precious objects, houses celebrity memorabilia, documents technological advances, and reflects visitors' own lives. Taking examples from science and technology, politics, decorative arts, military history, ethnic heritage, popular culture and everyday life, the authors provide historical context for the work of the Smithsonian and shed new light on what is important, and who is included, in American history. Throughout its history, Lubar and Kendrick conclude, the museum has played a vital role in both shaping and reflecting America's sense of itself as a nation.
