Nasty Business - One Biker Gang's Bloody War Against the Hell's Angels

By Paradis, Peter

Banff, AB: Harpercollins. Very Good. 2003. First Edition; First Printing. Mass Market Paperback. 0006391583 . Pages clean and unmarked, two pages near rear have a tiny edge tear. Bookstore stamp inside front cover. Cover has light wear to edges/corners and creasing on spine. B/w photos; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 313 pages; "Now he's somewhere in Canada with a new identity, possibly studying to be a plumber or carpenter. But for years his trade was drugs, violence, and revenge. Peter Paradis, a former male stripper and cocaine addict, rose to become a boss in the Rock Machine biker gang, only to later turn police informant. In Nasty Business, Paradis exorcises his personal demons as he recounts his life as an outlaw biker fighting a bloody street battle that captivated a city and country. The 1990s biker war on the streets of Montreal pit the established Hells Angels against upstarts the Rock Machine in a battle for the drug trade. Bombs blew up buildings and cars, while bullets cut down members from both gangs as well as unlucky civilians. After being shot by a Hells hit squad, Paradis "dreamed of having a Hells killed, and then seeing 30 or 40 of his fellow bikers at a wake in one of their clubhouses. We'd set up bazookas nearby and just blast the building into little pieces." His anger quickly turns to fatigue as the police close in and the Hells begin winning the war, spurring a penniless and ostracized Paradis to turn informant. Nasty Business provides a humbled look at the oft-glorified world of biker gangs, while exposing its reality of crime and terror. " (170noto) .

Pages clean and intact, cover has a little scuffing and slight wear to edges. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 224 pages; Frances Barkley was the first European woman to set foot on the west coast of Canada. She was just 17 when, in 1786, she left England to embark on an adventurous, round-the-world voyage that was to last eight years. Her husband, Captain Charles William Barkley, was a merchant trader, taking European goods on the long and dangerous trip to exotic ports in the Far East. He sailed his Imperial Eagle into the land of Chief Maquinna to trade with coastal natives and gain wealth transporting sea-otter skins across the Pacific Ocean from Vancouver Island to China. After a sheltered upbringing, Frances found herself in a wider world, helping her husband in his business, meeting strange and foreign peoples, giving birth to her children, surviving the tragedy of their deaths, and, through it all, observing her astonishing situation with wisdom and wit. Barkley Sound, Imperial Eagle Channel, and several other place names on Vancouver Island are lasting memorials of the visits of this intrepid couple. The coastal ship Frances Barkley, which today carries freight and passengers across the waters first seen by Frances over 200 years ago, is also a tribute to a young woman of openness and courage. Through generations, we follow their saga. We see the Molsons cope with change and opportunity in business, and we watch them deal with personal triumphs, private tragedies, and the everyday aspects of life. The first Molson arrived in Montreal in 1782 from England, with little money but a single-minded ambition. Working hard, with a belief in the future of his adopted land, John Molson established a small brewery in Montreal and put his heart and soul into the business. Over the next 200 years the Molsons expanded the brewery again and again. The founder's drive and ability was passed on to his sons, grandsons, and future generations. The family established a bank and a steamship line, recognizing that as the young country grew, opportunities would grow with it. They became a major force in politics, sports (the Montreal Canadiens hockey team) , and philanthropy. And they witnessed history, both through privileged eyes and as everyday participants. They were involved in the young nation's achievements, and in its rebellions, wars, and epidemics...... (*Note - due to heavy weight, extra shipping may apply) [1070] .

FLYING CANUCKS III Famous Canadian Aviators

By Peter Pigott

Harbour Publishing. Very Good. 2000. First Edition. Softcover. 1550172247 . Ex-library book but still in very nice condition - sturdy laminated cover and usual ex-lib type markings. Interior pages are clean and tight, a small amount of soiling to outer edge of pages. Cover has light scuffing. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 246 pages; "In the five years since the Flying Canucks series began," says Pigott, "I have never ceased to marvel that everything connected with aviation in Canada took place in the proverbial blink of an eye." It is barely nine decades since Casey Baldwin became the first Canadian to achieve sustained flight, and only seventy-odd years since J. Dalzell McKee and Earl Godfrey made the first flight across Canada. The "flying Canucks" in this volume include some legends of aviation lore, like James Richardson and Gordon McGregor, as well as a few whose exploits are less known, such as the Norwegian-born Bernt Balchen. "Babe" Woollett and Art Schade represent that special breed, Canada's bush pilots, and Donald McDonald, who flew in defence of Ceylon, speaks for the many Canadian World War II fighter pilots. The aerial achievements of Casey Baldwin and Don Muir serve as bookends of a century of aviation, and embody the nconquerable spirit of every era of flying. If there is a conclusion to be drawn from this intentionally eclectic compendium, it is that courage and audacity are timeless human traits. Flying Canucks III gives the reader a glimpse at the lives of some exceptional human beings - who also happen to be aviators. As Babe Woollett said, "I certainly hope God meant man to fly. Otherwise I've made a bloody fool of myself all of these years for nothing." [418-osl? ] .
