Backstrip almost totally detached. . Backstrip holding only for an inch at the front lower gutter. Last photo shows total separation along lower gutter. Backstrip sunned and chipped at the top edge. All 4 tips worn down to the underlying boards. Book is clean, in & out, including the three text block edges. Text quite nice, faintly aged but no glue browned pastedowns, foxing, marginalia, etc. .

FINE inside BUT pastedowns lightly foxed & inked name dated 1892. 8vo, 113pp. . TP lists NY over London. CP states typography & presswork both done in Boston. Certainly a US publication but the hand made paper (laid) is water marked John Dickinson & Co, a leading UK paper making business. The book was published only weeks after Tennyson's death. .

Gilt lettered spine, upper board gilt device, in blind on back. . Brown pastedowns. fep with a 1/2" closed tear. Otherwise flawless inside. 1/8" of cover tips worn thru to underlying boards. Spine ends frayed down to the text block level. BAL calls this the small paper edition. BAL states the small & large papers were likely printed simultaneously but BAL also say Longfellow did receive the small paper edition first. .

Tips & spine heel scuffed, spine top is frayed. .

A pristine book whose only flaw a bit of scuffing on tips & spine ends. Text block edges clean as new. Top edge tinted a very light bwown. Book stays closed when stood on its spine. A good sign of having been read with care, if at all. .

(2) Inner hinge paper of upper hinge cracking. Hinge itself still strong. .

Without Knopf's "First published ..." so not a first, but signed in first year of publication .

Brown covers of a soft suede like material. Very close to AS NEW. PRISTINE interior. . Apparently self published. Unusual format. First leaf a blank end paper, 2nd the SIGNED title page, 3rd the dedication page, then text. No half title page, table of contents, index of first lines, or any blank eps at book's end. TP has no publisher info, merely Rutledge's 1938 cp date. Only publisher info is "Williams Printing Co Spartansburg, S.C." in tiny black letters on the outside of the back cover. Apparently very scarce as no auctioned copies listed by either ABPC or Rare Book Hub. FLAWLESS BUT: tips & spine ends faintly scuffed, perhaps 1/10" or so effected.
