His unhappiness with Reconstruction drove him to California, where he became a famed professor of geology and natural history, as well as a co-founder of the Sierra Club. Resident and working in the South during the Civil War, he harbored racist views of Reconstruction; Quercus finds this ironic, considering his later academic career and fame at UC Berkeley. First published in 1888; this is a Very Good copy of the Second Edition, containing Le Conte's revisions of the previous version. Olive green cloth binding, tanned to a brown shade on the spine, which has gilt lettering. Clean text; 392 pages, with 12 pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. Boston & New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1902. John Fiske (1842-1901), an American historian and philosopher, popularized Darwin. He saw no conflict between evolution and religion, but in another area he was inconsistent. Although a fervent Abolutionist, he also harbored racist theories that would find fruition in eugenics theory. Originally published in 1883, this is a reprint issued as part of the "Standard Library Edition" in twelve volumes; this is Volume VII of that series. Despite his popularity, his work is uncommon tody. Red cloth binding, ruled in gilt and with a reproduced signature on the front cover, gilt lettering on the spine. Boston: Bradford & Read, 1815. Scottish neuroscientist George Fordyce (1736-1802) did work on phantom sensation in amputated limbs. A Fellow of the Royal Society, he was friends with Joshua Reynolds and Samuel Johnson.This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition (stated on Title Page). A rare book; all copies held institutionally are electronic or a later midcentury edition. Stiff paper covers; paper label on spine. Although extensively spotted, the text is quite clear and readable; 442 pages, with the Table of Contents and an Advertisement of the author's other works in the rear. Most pages are unopened. Dublin: James Williams, 1782. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of Volume II only of Goldsmith's multi-volume scientific treatise. Full leather binding; edges ruled in gilt; red and black title blocks on the spine, also ruled in gilt. Clean text; 399 pages; illustrated. Pages toned but very clear and unfoxed. Goldsmith's wonderful writing can still be enjoyed as it was origially presented. Showing its age, with rubbing at margins, some small chips, and a split spine corner; a bit splayed.. Not a beauty, but basically sound still; a bit of restoration work would preserve it for a few more hundred years. . Later Printing. Full-Leather. This is the fourth book by Havelock Ellis (1859-1939), who would next write (with John Addington Symonds) the first objective medical work on homosexuality. An uncommon to scarce title, except in reprint or subsequent revisions. Originally published in 1894; this is a Near Fine copy of the Second Edition, characterized as from "The Contemporary Science Series." Ellis was a pioneer in the study of human sexuality, with a somewhat diminished reputation due to his support for the now-disgraced "science" of eugenics. Maroon cloth binding, ruled, and with gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Clean text; 409 pages, with two indices and 12 pages of publisher adverts in the rear. From its first publication in 1789 to the dawn of the 20th Century, White's "Natural History" went through at least 90 editions in the British Isles alone, and it continues to delight. London: A. Donaldson, 1832. White's great natural history is still in print. Here is an early 19th-century edition in a full-leather binding. Smooth calf with gilt ruling on the front and rear covers; five raised bands on the spine, highlighted in gilt and with a red and gilt label. Clean text; 562 pages, with Index and Index to the Antiquities; marbled endpapers, all page edges also marbled. There is no publication date; however, the Preface, by "J.R.," is dated 1832. Interestingly, there are thirteen different publishers listed on the Title Page.The textblock is close to Fine, very bright and supple. However, this is a Good only copy: both gutters have cracked and are very tender; and the spine leather has separated and is barely holding on; about 1/3 (lower) is demolished and is not present. Black lettering and a rather jaundiced flesh filling the design. Bumped corners; previous-owner lettering on the FFEP. Niblo (pseudonym for Marshall Clark) was one of the more famous of the celebrity palmists of the day, and was involved in a rather public scandal. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. First Edition.. The famous botanist Mordecai Cubitt Cooke (1825-1914) first published this study in 1865; this is a Very Good copy of the First Edition Thus (a "New and Revised Edition"), illustrated with many coloured lithographs and black-and-white drawings throughout. Dark green cloth binding, ruled on the covers, with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 200 pages, indexed, and with a 47-page publisher's catalogue with "Great Reductions" in the back. Clean text; xviii, 138 pages; index, glossary, addenda. Many black-and-white illustrations. Contemporary (1881) signatures on both front paste-down and the Front Free Endpaper. New York: Hall and Company, 1880. [Alexander] Wilford Hall (1819-1902) was a Christian Evangelist and critic of the Theory of Evolution. He was quite successful, publishing almost twenty books; he is also known for some medical quackery. First published in 1877; this is a Very Good copy of the "Revised Edition" from three years later. The Thirty-Ninth Thousand. Brown decorative cloth binding, with stamping on the front cover in black. Titling and decoration on the spine in black and gilt. Clean text; ix, continues from page 13 to 524, with four pages of publisher adverts and Opinions of the Press in the rear. Frontis portraits of the named scientists.
