Catholic theologian Francois Fenelon (1651-1715) was a strong supported of Human Rights and connected with the "Quietism" heresy, hence he was a controversial but popular author.(and poet). This is a Very Good copy of the Fourth Edition (stated). Marbled paper-covered boards with spine and tips of black leather. Five raised bands on the spine, with gilt titling and decorations. Clean text; 272 pages; there are contemporary notations on page 157. Rubbed at the margins; the front endpaper has come loose but is present. . Fourth Edition. Quarter-Leather. New York: P. O'Shea, 1883. A collection of poems by an American Catholic author who wrote under the pen-name "Marie." This is a scarce title. It is not in WorldCat and the First Edition (1877) that the LOC has is an electronic version. A Very Good copy of the Fourth Edition, with a long, full-page inscription by the author, followed by a gift inscription dated two days later; both were written in San Francisco. Redish-brown cloth binding, ruled, with gilt title on the front cover; mildly rubbed at the margins. Clean text; 532 pages, with a two-page list of subscribers. Venice: Bassani, 1783. This "Life and Works of the Church Fathers" was a major work by the Jesuit theologian Pierre-Joseph Tricalet (1696-1761). This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of Volume Six only from the First Edition. Scarce to rare. Title (and text) is in Latin: "Complectens Illorium vitae, & geftorum breviarium: Operum Synopsim: Illustriora testimonia Dogmata, Mores, Disciplinam spectantia, & selecta Vitae spiritualis documenta." A summary of the life and work of the Church Fathers - their characters and teachings.Four of the Fathers are considered: Theodoret, Prosper of Aquitaine, Leo the First, and Caesarius of Arle. Providence: Knowles & Vose, 1847. Ichabod Cook (1779-1851) wrote this book to address the doctrinal differences between the Society of Friends and other Christian sects. Judging by his Introduction, he was under attack for his positions. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Cook wrote two other books; all are uncommon today. Marbled paper-covered boards with a leather spine, ruled; black spine label with gilt lettering. The text is superb: clean, bright, and supple; 171 pages, with an errata page. The covers show some wear, and the front of the spine has a split, but everything is holding nicely. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First Edition.. Half-Leather. Very Good Plus/No Jacket.

Oxford: Chez P.Fr. Gueffier, 1780. Jean-Pierre Cotelle (1709-1795), a rather controversial French cleric and theologian, wrote several volumes of the series, evidently regarded well-enough as to qualify for a pension. This is a Near Fine copy of Volume 15 of the the "Ecclesiastical Conferences of Agners on Human Acts." Rare. Full mottled calf binding. Five raised bands on the spine; labels in red and brown with gilt titling; gilt decorations and the number "15." Clean text; 592 pages; red stain to all page ends; marbled endpapers. Corners are bumped, and the original gilded edges are rubbed. The textblock is bright and fresh, no foxing. Probably as close as one can get to an "as new" designation in a two-hundred-year-old book. London: John Lane The Bodley Head Limited, 1927. This "wisdom book" of ethical teachings dates to the Second Century BCE. It is accepted by Roman Catholicism and the Eastern Orthodox as canonical scripture; for others, it is part of the Apocrypha ("The text of this Volume is the Revised Version of the Apocrypha"). This is an attractive production, with sixteen colour illustrations by Violet Brunton (1878-1951). The Introduction is by the journalist and art historian C. Lewis Hind (1862-1927). Large octavo, bound in black cloth with gilt decorations and titling. Clean text; xv, 2-page list of the illustrations, then 165 pages. Top-edge is gilt; others rough-cut. Bumped corners; spine gilt a bit dulled. A solid copy, well worth a speculative read.. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. Dublin: Robert Jackson, 1790. A major work by the blind Quaker philosopher John Gough of Kendal (1757-1825). This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition (Volume IV only). Smooth calf binding; five raised bands on the spine; red label with gilt lettering ("Gough's History"). Clean text; 171 pages, indexed. Contemporary (1815) gift inscription on the Title Page. The text is very clear and supple; some tanning to the page ends and endpapers but unfoxed. Philadelphia: Herman Hooker, 1848. For over two centuries the question of the anti-Judaism of "Voltaire" [Francois-Marie Arouet 1694-1778] has perplexed and been debated. A brilliant child of the Enlightenment and a prolific satirist like Jonathan Swift, his works spew an excessive dislike for Jews. But he was a Deist, uncomfortable with superstition and the revealed religion of the Old Testament; when admonished by the Sephardic Jew Issac Pinto, he admitted to error and thought to correct himself. This supposed Jewish answer was actually written by the Christian apologist Antoine Guenee [1717-1803] and appears less a defense of Judaism and more an assault on Deism. Philip Lefanu [c. 1735-1795] first published his translation in Dublin in 1777. This is a Very Good copy of the Third American Edition (stated). A rather scarce title. John Banville has written that "All of the Jameses had a morbidly acute sense of the darkness underlying life." James considers whether there is Evil or are there only Evil Deeds. Includes a Memoir of Penn by James M. Brown of Virginia. Maroon cloth binding, stamped on the front cover, with gilt titling. Clean text; 89 pages, with an Appendix of "Gospel Truths." There are two pages of "Opinions of the Press" in the front. Very minor rubbing at the margins; a rear endpaper has been torn out. An interesting bit of American religious history.. Second Edition. Daniel Dorchester (1827-1907) was a Methodist minister who wrote several of his books on temperance; here he pens an anti-"Romanism" tract regarding attempts by the Roman Catholic Church to establish parochial schools in the US. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. An uncommon work when compared with his others, even in institutional holdings. Dark brown cloth binding, decoratively ruled, with gilt titling on the front cover and spine. Clean text; 351 pages, with four pages of adverts for Dorchester's other works in the rear. Interestingly, tipped into the book in the rear is a 16-page phamplet from the Boston Committee of One Hundred entitled "An Open Letter to the Friends of Free Schools and American Liberties." This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the first edition, a posthumous issue. Two volumes bound as one. Full leather binding of polished calf. waving rule to covers; five raised bands; stamped titling on the spine, with gilt decorations. The ends of the covers have gilt decoration. Boston: Bowles and Dearborn, 1827. An anthology containing twelve doctrinal phamplets (actually eleven and an index) issued in various years by the American Unitarian Association. Although the Title Page gives the publication date as 1827, the chapters have different publishers and dates, from when they were origially printed. The latest one is 1837; Quercus therefore believes this to be the actual date of publication. This is a Very Good copy, really in quite nice condition. Marbled paper-covered boards with leather tips and spine; rules, with gilt lettering on the spine. Mildly rubbed and bumped. The text is clean and bright, quite superior to the norm.
