Description:
First edition of the Russian major futurist poet's travel account to the New World, illustrated with photographs and with Rodchenko's constructivist wrappers. The leading poet of Revolutionary Russia Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893-1930) attempted to get to the States three times since 1923: twice his visa was rejected and the third time he managed to obtain a visa to Mexico first. He arrived in Mexico City in July 1925 and was warmly welcomed both by representatives of the Soviet embassy and by the Mexican public, led by the artist Diego Riveira. There he finally received an entry visa to the United States. Arriving at the border and not being able to speak English, he could not explain to the border guard the purpose of his entry and thus ended up at the police station: "They came and asked which language I was going to speak. Out of shyness (it's embarrassing to not know any language), I said French […] I am familiar with simple French conversations about tea and buns, but I did not understand a word…

Description:
With the "progressive conquest of Siberia", up to Alaska. An early, large format publication, produced in St. Petersburg and which intends, in a very didactic way, to familiarize European readers with the history, geography, population, structure and economy of the Russian empire possibly at the height of its power, during Pushkin's Golden Age.
After a brief history of the Russian Empire covering the period from 862 until the beginning of the reign of Nicolas I (1796 - 1855), the work shows a genealogical table of the ruling dynasties. In the present example, the letterpressed Romanov's dynasty tree, ending with the name Alexander II, is expanded with manuscript notes of a 19th century reader, who updated it with the names of the spouse of Alexander II and their children.
The large double-page tables and maps include a wealth of information on Russian geography, flora, fauna, trade, peoples etc.
Of special note are the insets on the Don Cossacks, Georgia, Caucasus and the American colonies. A large… Read More

Description:
THE FIRST BOOK IN RUSSIAN DEALING WITH THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, illustrated with large folding maps.VERY RARE: we could trace only one example in public institutions outside Russia, in Rome's National Central Library. We could find a copy in the Russian State Library's catalogue, but not in the National Library.
There was keen interest shown in Russia in the American Civil War, not least because from the reign of Tsar Nicholas I onwards, Russia had increasingly looked towards America, both as an ally, and as a model for diplomatic and military might. This took on extra significance after Russia's defeat in the Crimean War, when the government hoped that the U.S. might provide a counter-balance to European military hegemony, particularly that of Britain and France. Significantly, Russia was the only major European power to offer vocal support to the Union. Indeed, the Russian Navy sent two fleets to US waters in 1861-2 in order to safeguard them in the event of war with the British and French, a move… Read More

"Very rare" (Savine) illustrated émigré publication, with historical folding maps featuring the arctic coast of Russia from Europe to the North-West passage and the Alaska. The compendium is divided into two parts, each comprising thematic articles written by different Navy officers and commanders. The first part is an overview of the history and achievements of the Russian Navy from the times of Peter the Great (creation of the Russian fleet) up until the first post-revolution year. It focuses in particular on Siberia, the history of the Alaskan Russian-American colonies and on discoveries in the Arctic and the North Pacific.
The second part is dedicated mostly to Russian naval officers in the US, especially the Association of Former Russian Naval Officers in America, which was established in New York in May 1923 by a group of 90 senior officers of the Russian Navy.
