St. Paul, Minnesota: privately printed, 1896. First Edition; illustrated with various title pages and bindings of books described in the text. This is the author’s own copy, with his bookplate; interleaved with pages bearing his annotations and corrections, with clippings pasted in. Bound in what is apparently original morocco, but rebacked with the original labels (faded); old shellac, scuffs and wear, yet solid and clean; in a custom full morocco clamshell box.

London and Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1950. First Edition. One of 550 numbered copies. Vincent Starrett’s copy, with his bookplate and ownership signature; very good in a damaged dust jacket.

New York: Carleton, 1884. First Edition. Moderate cloth wear, especially at the top of the spine; very good copy in publisher’s cloth; one of 500 numbered copies.

Paris: Brunet Libraire, 1810. First Edition of a book that became a standard in the field, revised, supplemented, and reprinted several times. Volumes one and two, of three issued, but these two comprise the complete dictionary, and it is in original, truly remarkable condition. Each volume is entirely untrimmed, bound in paper, with printed spine labels. Aside from some dog-earing and rubbing of the spine labels, in excellent condition. An unusual survivor, as books in this period were sold this way as they were intended to be bound to the purchaser’s order, and they seldom surface as they were issued.

No place of publication: Peoples’ Series: American Views, n.d. [ca. 1890]. An excellent view of the galleries and stacks, with a fuzzy figure working at a table on the floor. Very good or better condition.

Leipzig: Müller, 1791. First Edition. Evidently complete with folding plates and numerous illustrations and tables. Several pages concern musical notation and a folding chart details printing in Greek. While this is offered as a “manual” for beginners, it is a sophisticated guide to the use of a major piece of industrial machinery of the time. Two parts bound into a single volume; the second part bound with its own half-title leaf. Contemporary boards with a leather title label on the spine; two small, neat ownership signatures, one dated 1940 and a second 1797. Minor wear and a small chip at the foot of the spine; an excellent copy.

Ditchling, Sussex: Saint Dominic’s Press, n.d. [c. 1925]. First Edition (revised). Illustrated with three wood engravings by Gill. Publisher’s linen; very good to fine.

Austin: W. Thomas Taylor, 1991. First Edition. A fine copy of this thorough, scholarly and entertaining account of the three year investigation into the forgery and sale of early Texas imprints. Presentation copy; inscribed by Taylor.
