Description:
London: Faber and Faber, 1936. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 2nd Edition. 8vo - over 7¾. Murder in the Cathedral, poetic drama in two parts, with a prose sermon interlude, the most successful play by American English poet T.S. Eliot. The play was performed at Canterbury Cathedral in 1935 and published the same year. Set in December 1170, it is a modern miracle play on the martyrdom of St. Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury. The play's most striking feature is the use of a chorus in the Classical Greek manner. The poor women of Canterbury who make up the chorus nervously await Thomas's return from his seven-year exile, fretting over his volatile relationship with King Henry II. Thomas arrives and must resist four temptations: worldly pleasures, lasting power as chancellor, recognition as a leader of the barons against the king, and eternal glory as a martyr. After Thomas delivers his Christmas morning sermon, four knights in the service of the king accost him and… Read More

Description:
New York: Charles Scribnber's Sons, 1927. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed Robert E. Sherwood. 1st Edition. The author's first book. "The Road to Rome" was the first play of Robert E. Sherwood, and a success on Broadway in 1927. It has a comic situation set in a period of history which allows Mr. Sherwood to work in some of his anti-war feelings. Mr. Sherwood has set his play in 216 B.C., at the time when Hannibal was nearing the end of his march on Rome. Hannibal didn't attack Rome when he reached it, Mr. Sherwood explains, because a certain blond, the bored and sex-starved wife of Rome's dictator, got to him first. When Rome seems doomed, she flees the city and breaks through Hannibal's lines, because for her boredom there are the elephants and for her bed there is Hannibal. In addition to seducing him she casually persuades Hannibal of the futility of warfare, popping grapes into her mouth all the while, as it were. Nice Deco bookplate on front pastedown..

Description:
New York: Signet Books # D2019, 1948. Book. Very Good. Mass Market Paperback. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. One of Tennessee Williams' most subtle and tender works, Summer and Smoke explores the conflict between the hedonistic body and the lofty spirit. Set in Mississippi, Alma Winemiller, the minister's daughter, has grown up loving the boy who lives next door: John Buchanan, the doctor's son, is a wild, adventurous, mischievous pleasure seeker. He spends the hot Mississippi summers drinking, gambling, and romancing. His only religion is the anatomy chart on his wall, and what it teaches him about man's needs: food, truth, and lovemaking. Alma, on the other hand, is quiet, eccentric, and high-strung. Her name means "soul" in Spanish; she aspires to lofty spiritual goals, and holds to strong moral standards. Despite their differences, John and Alma are magnetically drawn to each other, and the spiritual and physical romance that almost blooms between the two of them is… Read More
