This is a poor copy, lacking the front cover and title page. The original rear board is present, very worn, and half the spine is still covered, including an unreadable title piece. The first page present is filled with recommendations, from Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story, many Senators et al., and it is chipped and torn with the loss of a few words. The following page, the Preface (p. i), has the lower corner chipped. These lower corners are chipped or bent up to about p. 30 but after the Preface there are no words lost. The dictionary itself is complete and reasonably clean, with minimal occasional foxing and light browning to the edges. Sold as is; very fragile. 536 pp.

Begins with Year 4, #11 of the Ploughshare (changes to 'Plowshare' with Year 5 #28), running to Year 5 #34, Jan. 1852 to Dec. 1853. It is written entirely in phonetically spelled English, using many odd characters. The content ranges from political essays to chess. He also has articles on an entirely new alphabet he developed, the Cosmophonetic alphabet. Then there are 2 issues of The Cosmopolitan, which are printed entirely in that alphabet. Editio Nova" (New Edition), annotated/edited by Marcus Zuerius van Boxhorn (Latinized to Boxhornius on the title page), who had died 6 years earlier. Boxhorn was an important linguist before it was a separate science; he was the first to propose the existence of Proto-Indoeuropean, which he called Scythian. This is a 16mo volume with rather small type, bound in full vellum with a leather title piece. Good plus; the vellum is warped so that the front cover has begun to separate, and the front pastedown is torn. Has all-edge gilt but the top is quite dull. 404 pp. + index. Owner's names on the obverse of ffep and facing page; one of these has left a note, "collates perfect". (I didn't check.) The text is free of any writing or foxing.
