Very Good+. 1st, vg+ softcover, 111 pp. Laid in is a 'Dear Reader' slip, a bookmark with the author's quote, a trifold pamphlet, 'Your Passport to Happiness and Success', a folded page with 4 short articles by the author, and a SIGNED typed letter which begins, "I would like to present my workshop in your area..." All are nf.

Amsterdam: Marc Michel Rey, 1755. Hardcover. Good. Very early printing of this important masterpiece, matches most conditions for a true First Edition but there is no frontispiece (it may have been removed in rebinding): three canceled pages; misspelled author's name ('Jaques' appears on title page and at end of dedication); vignettes on title and dedication pages; hand-correction on p11 (accent on conforme); ends with Errata/Avis page; no engraving at p258; on bottom edge of p159, 'L5' is mismarked 'K5'; page LXV numbered correctly; cancels and hand-corrected accent lead us to believe this is not one of the 'counterfeit' or pirated facsimile editions. 8vo, in very old full-leather binding which may be contemporary; 18th-century marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, dentilles, triple gilt rule on boards, and raised bands on spine; original blue silk ribbon, very fragile; gilt sunflowers in panels on spine; title label has just the letters that would fit so it reads… Read More

Gerard Wagner. 1st thus, a book designed in the Rudolf Steiner fashion, a large oblong folio in decorated stiff card covers with a red cloth spine. 7 full-page color plates accompany the German text. Vg+; some tiny spots on the rear cover.

Amsterdam/Batavia: Daniel Elsevier/P.J. & Cornelius Hackios, 1676. Hardcover. Very Good. Volume 2 only. A vg copy internally, bound in soiled vellum (probably later) that is beginning to warp. Handwritten spine. Red speckled edges, the top very much darkened. Pages are clean with only very minimal foxing. Title page has the publisher's sigil of an eagle flying in an oval with the word 'Movendo'. The 'books' are paginated separately. About the final third of the book is filled with commentaries, indices, and a variorum for both volumes.

Folio, bound in original vellum; Latin text only; fair (vellum warped, rippled, stained, and soiled; boards bowed; chips and tears to bottom edge of front board; bottom corner of rear board chipped and very heavily worn; water ring on rear board; two strips of clear tape on front board at spine, three strips on rear board at spine; prev. owner wrote author and title on spine in ink; second inked title almost completely faded from spine; inch-deep chip to top of spine which takes out part of 'Ciceronis'; chip to spine repaired with small piece of tan leather; two tears to middle of spine; chip to edge of spine along front board; spine soiled and stained; pages rippled and somewhat foxed; waterstains to top and side edges of pages throughout; pencil writing on front pastedown and verso of ffep; inked notes in Latin on first blank page after text; broken at very first page and at pp224-5); 233pp.

Paris: G. de Luyne, C. Blageart, T. Girard, 1687. First Edition . Hardcover. Good. The 1st edition of this important Rationalist text, by an author who began as a poet and playwright, failed miserably at both, but went on to produce several great works of Descartian philosophy. A good copy, in probably the original leather, stamped on the spine "HIS/DES/ORA". The gilt devices on the spine are faded, the covers are scarred and somewhat bowed, and all pp. before the title page are missing. Edges are red-spotted; top edge soiled to dark brown. No foxing. 179 pp., French text.

Paris: Libraires Associes, 1797. Hardcover. Very Good-. Meditations on the Revolutions of Empires". Written on the eve of the Frernch Revolution, and published during it. This 12mo version could be an early printing of the 3rd edition, but I rather think it is a later printing of the 2nd. Vg- in half leather with marbled boards; has about an inch and a half of worm damage on one side of the spine of vol. 2. All corners are worn. Tops are dust-darkened, but the text is as clean as you could wish, as are the frontispiece and 2 folding maps in vol. 1. 246 + 272 pp.

Princeton, N.J.: Princeton U, 1983. First Edition . Hardcover. Good/Good+. 1st, brown cloth, good-only in a good+ dj; the book was apparently dropped. There are no visible bumps but both pastedowns are torn and the rear hinge is started. The dj is well rubbed, chipped at the corners and spine ends. 413 pp. incl. index. INSCRIBED "...from Wesley" on the ffep and dated September 1985.

New Haven, Conn.: A. H. Maltby and Co., 1821. Hardcover. Good. Rare American imprint by a publisher active from about 1819-1850, who began publishing the Yale Literary Review; book first published in 1709. This title is often confused with a book published in 1836 in France by Baron von Holbach; Holbach's book is anti-organized religion and Trenchard's is not; Trenchard was a former Quaker who theorized that 'transports', etc., attributed to God, are owing to natural causes. Title page mistakenly attributes this title to John Locke, the reason for this is unknown; we found a list of books misattributed to Locke in a Locke bibliography but this is not on it. This is a chapbook, about 3in x 5in, recently bound in nice leather with marbled endpapers; new binding is near fine, the chapbook only good (original covers discolored, stained, rubbed and chipped; chip and tear to side edge of chapbook front cover, closed with non-acidic Filmoplast P; many pages have been turned down and most… Read More
