Northampton [MA]: Thomas M. Pomroy. Very Good; Boards sunned and rubbed, title page and rear several leaves . foxed, otherwise very bright and clean.. 1805. Hardcover. 30, [2] pp. 22 cm. Sabin 3935. Rebound in cloth-backed boards circa early 20th century. Owner signature of Levi Andrews on title page. Bates was a Massachusetts lawyer and politician, serving as U. S. Senator from 1841-45. This speech dates before his political career began in 1808 with his election to the Massachusetts State House of Representatives. Bates, and thank him for the elegant and spirited Oration...and to request of him a Copy for the press." Many footnotes throughout, some expanding upon political messages, some translating Latin phrases. Contains passionate abolitionist views, describing irony of Southern State leaders being viewed as "...GODS OF FREEDOM, while their slaves are bleeding at their feet." (p. 23). Also bemoans Louisiana Purchase and federal debt. No copies currently offered for sale in the trade. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
