The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, is second state with green lettering on the front flap and the five-blurb (w/Publisher's Weekly) rear panel. Overall, an excellent, highly presentable copy of this winner of both The National Book Award and The National Book Critics Circle Award. Description:
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1923. Very Good+ in a Very Good+ dustjacket. Brown boards quarterbound in black cloth. The spine is stamped in gilt; the decorative front panel, black-printed, has a paste-on label of an Indian brave. Quarto. Yellow topstain. 274pps., with numerous illustrations by the artist with three of the plates being in full-color. Early printing: 1923 (the same year of the first edition ) on the title-page, L-X on the copyright page). There is superficial insect damage near the top of the front joint and bumping to the upper tips which has caused the top corner of the textblock to be slightly crimped. Also, a previous owner's name has been neatly penned on the ffep. Otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. The price-clipped dustjacket, glossy in a new mylar sleeve, has modest chipping at the extremities and light wear along the top-edge; the Remington paste-on illustration is in fine, colorful condition. A very nice copy -- uncommon in jacket and in so nice a jacket --… Read More

New York: Simon & Schuster, 2004. [2004]. Near Fine in a Fine dustjacket. Speckled tan boards with a beige, gilt-stamped backstrip. Quarto. Map-endpapers. xv + 236pps. There is a remainder mark to the top-edge, otherwise as new: clean, tight, square, and bright. All tips are sharp. Yet to be read. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, is as new; the original price is intact. SIGNED by the author -- without further inscription -- on the title-page. "...In the final volume of 'The Berrybender Narratives,' Tasmin and her family are under arrest in Mexican Santa Fe. Tasmin, who would once have followed her husband anywhere, is no longer even sure she likes him, or knows where to go to next. Captain Clark, of Lewis and Clark fame, is puzzled by the great changes sweeping over the West, replacing red men and buffalo with towns and farms. Jim Snow, Kit Carson and one of Lord Berrybender's many illegitimate offspring make their way back to Santa Fe. But even they are unable to prevent the… Read More

Description:
Idaho: Caxton, 1948. Fine in a Near Fine dustjacket. This is the SIGNED edition, limited to 1000 copies, of which this is number 213. Fully-bound in grainy brown cloth. The spine is stamped in gilt. Beige topstain. Pictorial endpapers. 373pp. This is an excellent copy, the only flaw being light touches of rubbing to the lower tips and the heel of the spine. Otherwise clean, tight, and square. All tips are sharp. Many pages are uncut (unread) and all are bright. This volume has been kept in obvious good care. The dustjacket, glossy in mylar, has a bit of crinkling to the lower tips; there are no chips or tears. I would grade the jacket fine except that it does appear price-clipped -- I say 'appear' because there is an underlying brown-paper layer to it that shows a printed price of $7.00. You won't find a better copy of this title: it is in splendid condition. Buy with confidence: all books, gradings, and descriptions are rendered the care of a genuine bibliophile. Stated First Editon, however these Grosset & Dunlap issues are re-prints using the same printing plates as the Harper original. There is mild bumping to the tips and spine-ends and a light soil-mark on the front board. Also, there is a faint bit of foxing to the page-edges. Otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. The text is in splendid condition; no reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has modest edgewear and a 1 1/2" closed tear at the bottom of the front panel. All in all, a very nice and colorfully jacketed copy of this early issue. New York: The Dial Press, 1964. Near Fine in a Very Good dustjacket. Patterned brown boards quarterbound in black cloth. The spine is gilt-stamped. Map-endpapers. 440pps. There is mild rubbing wear to the tips. Also, there is a small soil-mark on pages 418-19. Otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has touches of rubbing and edgewear -- particularly at the spine-ends. There are a couple of small chips at the head of the spine and a 1/4" closed tear at the bottom of the front panel. The great bulk of the jacket's orange ink, commonly rubbed, is present in this instance; only slight loss at the heel of the spine and a faint strip on the front panel. The original price (5.95) is intact. Overall, quite a nice copy of this -- at turns, hilarious and moving -- classic of western literature. Boston: Fields, Osgood & Co., 1871. Good+ in the publisher's pebbled maroon cloth. The spine is stamped in gilt; both the front and rear boards are blind-ruled. Chocolate-brown endpapers. 256pps. 2nd edition, with "Brown of Calaveras" added. There is modest rubbing to the board-edges and the spine is a bit sunned. There is, also, an 1" split at the top of the rear joint, likely testament to insect damage. Internally, the ffep has become detached (it is laid in) and has a chip in its upper corner. The original owner's signature, dated Feb. 1871, is near the top of the title-page. The binding is a bit brittle, though sound. The text is clean and bright, overall, with only the light and sporadic instance of foxing. A flawed, though -- at the least -- a nice reading copy of this old volume of stories and sketches.
