The Burton Club 17 volumes. Bagdad Edition - limited to one thousand numbered sets, of which this is Number 641. Printed by the Burton Club for private subscribers only. Limited edition. No date or place of publication date given - estimated c. 1900s. All 17 volumes have been covered in protective plastic wrappers by previous owner. Tan-coloured cloth-covered boards. 'Crossword' motif printed on first page. Title page and publisher's details printed in black and red. Outside edges have been lightly bumped and rubbed and covers have some light damp staining. A few of the volumes have some small tears to some of the covers or spine edges. The spines have some bumping to the tops, bottoms and edges. Each volume has its own label on the spine - all labels are darkened and stained, and worn away a little at the edges. Pages are all yellowed with age, but clean and tightly bound. Some foxing to inside pages. Gold gilt edging to top edges of pages. Gilt slightly worn and scuffed. Other edges of pages are deckled. Each volume includes black and white illustrations, each with its own tissue paper guard. Very slight musty smell to pages. Volume 1 and 14: Previous owner has written notes in pencil on first page, which have then been rubbed out - slight mark remains. Small hole on edge of spine. Volume 2: Large tear along the hinge of the inside cover and first page - internal binding revealed. Volume 3, 4 and 7: Have similar tears to inside - Volume 4 also has tear along the hinge of the back cover. Voume 5: Small tear to inner lining of back cover.
