Scribner's, New York, 1972, first US edition, 240 p. ill. b/w photos, map front end papers, full rigged ship and sails identified on back end papers. The French Merchant Marine ships called bounty ships 1870-1920, moved cargoes to the overseas possessions. The French had low desertion rates and the ships more comfortable and safe. They also took easier passages for the ships. Many were Breton sailor, Henri Picard sailed on one of these ships.

Every sailor will want the definitive lists of ship's carpenter tools, types of anchors, house flags, "rules of the road", loadlines and draft lines, rigging, hatches, sails, masts, and so much more. Karlsson, a Finn from the Aland Islands, was a professional sailor with the last of the big Cape Horn sailing ships which sailed from the Finnish port of Mariehamn. He first went to sea in 1919 and later served on the famous four-masted barque Herzogin Cecilie.

A most important port on Lake Ontario for those coming up through the Erie Canal system and proceeding westward. Later the trading of goods became important. The improvement of the harbour and shipbuilding made it a thriving centre..

Good, wear to boards and edges. The clipper ships were in one of the most risky and adventurous trades into China: the opium trade between 1820 & 1865. Book heavy extra postage required.

The book recalls the Great White Fleet --the palatial passenger ships that provided summer tours of the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence, and the Saguenay, and the splendid summer resort hotels at Murray Bay and Tadoussac. The tragedies are here too, including the burning of the Noronic in Toronto harbor, one of the most awesome disasters in Canadian maritime history. Heavy will require extra postage.

Sea Breezes is a magazine published monthly that is devoted to the worldwide shipping industry. This 12 issue set from 1983 are in a very good condition with some light foxing around the edges, fading of the covers, and some small pen notations on the cover.
