Vellum has repair at hinge, soiling to boards and edges of textblock. Foxing and some staining to first endpapers as well. Ownership signatures of "B. Hath Sec: 1797", "Hon'bl Mr. Powlett D.D." on pastedown in old browning ink and, in pencil, "D. R. Shackleton Bailey / February 1952" on flyleaf, along with a card of Philip G. Matthews, Christ (sic) College glued to pastedown. Shackleton Bailey was a noted Ciceronian scholar who worked both in England and the US. A 50's vintage Blackwell's bookshop ticket on the lower edge of the pastedown. [10], xiv, [2], 990 p. (actually 996 p. : the pagination repeats 627 to 632), [6], including index and errata.. 6 slightly raised bands. Vellum is ruled on boards with a design a center. One illustration at A2, reproducing a commemorative stelae found in 1722 honoring Propertius. A still respected edition of Propertius and a thorough scholarly effort by the younger Burmann, relying on earlier scholars such as Brockhusius, Scaliger, Heinsius, and Francius Modius, and a great other works both good and bad.
