Description:
[New Mexico: 1939-40]. Oblong quarto souvenir album (8" x 12"); 20 leaves, of which 11 used. Contents include 48 original photographs and two printed postcards. Most of the photos are small-format Brownie snapshots, 2-3/4" x 2"; a few larger (up to 3" x 5"); two are captioned in the image "Vaughn, New Mexico, Nov. 23, 1940." Slight toning to album edges, but contents generally fine. An evocative album of images recording the career of an unidentified C.C.C. recruit in the American southwest. The snapshots, all original amateur images, show scenes of corpsmen at work and play, on horseback, in pickup trucks, etc., all against a series of arid backgrounds. C.C.C. records on-line identify Co. 3349 as having been based in Ft. Sommer [Sumner?] New Mexico, engaged primarily in work with the Soil Conservation Service. Two of the photographs here appear to depict large farm ponds, these possibly being projects completed by the company.

Wrappers rather worn with several chips and closed tears, upper cover lettering partly effaced, all mounted photographs have been removed, else About Very Good. Yearbook issued by the CCC Jakersville Camp in Laporte, Pennsylvania, the text portion accomplished in manuscript throughout by Edward Berton of Charleroi, PA, during his tenure with the Corps from April to April, 1936-7. Berton appears to have been involved chiefly in construction done at Worlds End State Park, including constructing the parking lot and foot bridges, though he was also responsible for sweeping the barracks every Saturday, cracking rocks, and raking. Several leaves are devoted to "Autographs of My Buddies," and cartoons featuring headless CCC members to be completed with kodak portraits, though young Berton has instead filled them in with his own drawings.…
