With woodcut numerals on the title page and denoting each "chapter." Bound in red cloth-covered boards with a floating spine, hand-sewn with black thread. Printed title label mounted to front board. Of an edition limited to 75 copies, this is hand-numbered copy 27. Further, this is one of "20(ish)" that were "bound in boards using a secret Belgian binding." In addition, the author has added his initials "RC" in pen, with "a plates a plate!" Slight soiling to front board; withal, bright and fresh. Dada-esque ruminations on the author's enigmatic essence, being that of a "uniformist." On the copyright page the author offers thanks to Gaylord Shanilec.

Published the year of the Seattle Potlatch celebration that turned violent with anti-Wobbly agitation, the cover features "Everybody Talk Chinook at the Seattle Potlatch." SMITH 8105.

NP: W. M. Hawley, 1943. Single sheet printed recto. Very Good. Single sheet printed in black recto only, red chop in upper right corner, measuring 22 x 17 inches. With a chronological representation of 224 examples of Chinese characters. With three pencil "x" marks in lower margin; two old folds (one vertical, one horizontal) now mellowed. Verso features a gift inscription from one etymologist to another. Withal, a bright copy. As is well known, the Chinese developed moveable type centuries before Gutenberg, albeit a type composed of ideograms, as opposed to letters. Hawley's chart cleverly presents the evolution of ideograms from those found on bronzes 2000 BC to modern brush-written forms.

Bound in black half-cloth over exquisite paste paper covers, printed paper label on spine. A bright, fresh copy with no detracting qualities. Of an edition limited to 125 copies, this is hand-numbered copy #38. Signed by Faye at the colophon. A wordless novel concerning Hebdomeros' inability to grab hold of language. Faye provides a one-page introduction, letterpress, explaining the myth that informed her illustrated narrative. Faye's linocuts are enchanting, combining a 1920s avant-garde aesthetic with an contemporary vibe that's quite electric.

Laid in are printed four-page brochure for the Lloyd Reynolds exhibit "A Life of Forms in Art" at the Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, 2011, as well as a one-page prospectus for the exhibition catalog. During his last year the well-known Portland author, calligrapher and teacher wrote this history of the alphabet in the form of personal letters to his friend William Gunderson. Printed by John Laursen at Press-22. Preserved in a clear archival sleeve.

Tissue guards lightly foxed, leaves otherwise unmarked and binding solid. With chapters on writing well, book-keeping, legal forms, historical statistics, parliamentary law, the language of flowers, writing poetry, home amusements, remedies, etc. A remarkably well-preserved copy of a handsome Gilded Age home reference.

At the time Tweddell was teaching Chinese at the UW's Far Eastern Department; following his service in WWII, he embarked for work in Western China, and left this manuscript for Jacobs to prepare for publication. The poet-linguist, who lives on Quadra Island in British Columbia's Gulf Islands, gained worldwide recognition for his The Elements of Typographic Style.
