Birmingham, 1885. First Edition. Letter. Very good. Largely responsible for a system of national education in England, here, Dixon acknowledges Forster's prior congratuations (for Parliamentary appointment) and offers a return compliment. Dear S. Forster, I received your congratulations - but wanted to acknowledge them until I could return the compliment. I am delighted to be able to do so now - trust that we shall have many a talk in London. It is to be feared that there will be fare more talk than work in Parliament! Ever yours truly, George Dixon One of Dixon's first achievements as Mayor in early 1867 was a private conference he held in his house for the leading men of the town to discuss a possible remedy for the lack of education for children. In March a public meeting was held in the Town Hall where the Birmingham Education Society was formed along the lines of one created in Manchester and Salford in 1864. The society raised money to pay the school fees of some…

West Newbury , 1900 . letter . Very good. 4p letter in mailing envelope: My dear Miss Cummings: Miss Kelly of course how could a man forget the name of such a pretty girl? I am sorry that beside having misinformed a waiting world about the opening day, I made misstate much in writing to you, fortunately not in print this time. I have only a [---] aquaintance with Miss Brooks at the Museum. I met her once many years later and I saw her unboxing the flowers at John Abbot's funeral. And when I began to hear of Miss Brooks at the school I assumed it was the same until Luis Howe sent me a letter from Miss Jennie Brooks because she had some nice things to say about thie History. She writes ---- "museum and school, until my securty, as a family, I have been more or less connected with them. Wish my oldest sister was in one of the very early classes of the school. Description:
Edinburgh, 1945. Letter. Very good. Dear Grace and Gramma: Just a line or two this morning whilst waiting for the chow line to subside. I am on the fourth day of my furlough here and have found this city most impressive. Talk about Story Book Castles - there are more castles around here than one can count. Just as you would picture them, high, black, gloomy and massive outlined against a dreary sky or on the rocky coast. I was swimming in the Firth of Fourth yesterday and want to play a little golf on the famous St. Andrews course before returning. The war news is cerrtainly giving us a lot of optimism although the surrender will not effect our homecoming date to any great extent. It will certainly be wonderful to know that the world is once more at peace. I will write again soon - With love, Bruce.
