Description:
Zürich: Belser, 1985 3 volumes 12mo (19.5 cm), 20 ff of facsimile in blue morocco binding, front board gilt; 28, [4] pp; 68, [4] pp in publisher's cloth, housed in slip-case (slipcase rubbed and slightly dusted). A facsimile of Felice Feliciano's alphabet from the Vatican Library, accompanied by commentary and insights into facsimile production. Limited to 200 copies, this is number 49. Felice Feliciano (1433-1479) stands as a fascinating yet often overlooked Renaissance figure: a calligrapher, antiquarian (with expertise in Roman antiquities and a collector of inscriptions), author of alchemical poetry, and ultimately, a printer. In 1460, his keen interest in epigraphy led him to graphically reconstruct the Alphabetum Romanum on paper, now preserved in manuscript Vat. lat. 6852. In this work, the author meticulously depicts the entire Latin alphabet, with letters measuring 8 cm in height and rendered in two colors. Additionally, the work features a series of recipes for preparing inks in… Read More

Description:
Scolar Press, 1987 4to (31 cm), XVIII, 554 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (minor shelf-wear). "Matthew Paris's illustrated Chronica Majora is not only a familiar landmark in English medieval history but also an important milestone in the history of Gothic art. Produced by a man of remarkably diverse and modern interests, Paris's drawings deal with contemporary political, social, economic, and religious issues and events; they also provide some of the earliest and most extensive pictorial documents of medieval heraldry, cartography, and natural science. In this first full study of the Chronica Majora illustrations, Suzanne Lewis interprets Paris's art both in relation to his text and to the thirteenth-century world in which it was created -- the turbulent period of the Mongol invasions and the last Crusades. By examining the artist's origins, training, and stylistic development, she redefines Matthew Paris's role in thirteenth-century English art."… Read More

The British Library, 1990 4to (27.5 cm), 64 pp, 51 plates. Laminated wrappers (wrappers slightly toned, inscription on the half-title). From the blurb: "The Bedford Hours is one of Britain's major treasures. An outstanding example of late medieval manuscript art, it was written and illuminated in the early 15th century for John, Duke of Bedford, younger brother of King Henry V, and his wife, Anne of Burgundy. The principal artist of the leading Parisian workshop in which it was produced takes his name, the 'Bedford Master' from his English patron. Expertly planned and professionally executed, the Bedford Hours is celebrated for the enormous range of its pictorial scheme, with many superb large miniatures in brilliant colours, and almost 1250 exquisite marginal details. Here Janet Backhouse examines the overall design of the Hours, discussing the historical background to its production and ownership, with 60 colour and black-and-white plates showing full pages and details beautifully… Read More

Description:
London: The British Library , 1998 4to (25.5 cm), xi, 260 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. Proceedings of the annual Hereford Conferences sponsored by the Scriptorium: Center for Christian Antiquities. The central aim of this innovative volume is to examine the many ways in which the Bible, as a manuscript, was given shape and identity by different communities of believers. The scope, both chronologically and culturally, is vast, beginning with an examination of the methodology of the scribes who produced the Dead Sea Scrolls, and concluding with new evidence for the propagation of the Scriptures some fifteen centuries later, at the dawn of the age of printing. Leading scholars from different disciplines have been brought together to investigate the many ways in which scribes and craftsmen created cultural artifacts which enhanced their reader's veneration for the holy texts and which, for literate and non-literate believers alike, often became sacred objects in their own right.
