Edinburgh: William P. Nimmo. Good with no dust jacket. c1875. Hardcover. unpaginated but approx 365 pages. Two days per page, plus a page with blanks opposite each day to fill in names. Blue cloth with exuberant black and gilt Victorian decoration, gilt ruling, spine equally decorated in gilt, a bit of rubbing at extremities and joints, gilt edges, title page in red and black, every page in red and black with red ruling, occasional charming engravings, no names have been filled in on this example. However, there are the proverb collectors bookplates of Keir, Sir John Stirling Maxwell and de Guinzbourg. No date, but these "birthday books" were produced by Nimmo from at least 1873-1885. Not common in commerce or in Worldcat. A charming example of a Victorian birthday book with wonderful proverbial provenance. ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall .

Paper is a bit grubby, chipped at corners and fore-edge, spine covering worn but still intact. Interior book plate of military man/spy/book collector Victor de Guinzbourg. Otherwise clean and unmarked, paper quite browned and brittle, some page turning chips and tears. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

Uppsala: Zeipel et Palmblad. Good with no dust jacket. [1818]. Hardcover. [10] 39 pp. In Finnish and Latin, the Finnish in a Fraktur type. Dissertation praeside Johanne Trane´r ... proponit Carolus Axelius Gottlund ... die xii Dec. 1818. In full calf, boards worn and scuffed, top board barely hanging on, back board detached, spine partly perished. Front board has the emboss of noted collector William Stirling, interior has book plates of follow up collectors deGuinzbourg and Keir. Text is clean and unmarked. Very scarce work on Finnish proverbs by the Swedish philologist, translator and poet. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 39 pages .

Dark green cloth with triple blind ruling, gilt to spine, minor shelf wear at extremities. Inside front cover has bookplate of noted WWII spy and proverbs collector Victor de Guinzbourg. Paris: Imprimerie de Firmin Didot Freres. Good with no dust jacket. 1833. Second Edition. Hardcover. xv, 377, [v], 8, [iv], 2, 3 pp. Appendix, Turkish Proverbs. In French with extensive Turkish, back unnumbered pages are only Turkish. With the bookplate of celebrated proverb/maxim collectorLt. Colonel V.S.M. de Guinzbourg, the early incarnation. In what appears to be original 3/4 cloth with dark blue/black marbled board. Boards are scuffed, bottom edge/corner bumped, brown cloth spine with dulled gilt. Interior inside front cover and first blank have some spattered soiling at bottom edge. General browning and occasional small spot but otherwise clean and nice. Hard to find and nice provenance. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 377 pages .

London: T. Harvey. Good with no dust jacket. [1830?]. Second Edition. Leather. 8, 100 pp. 12mo. Bound in smooth calf with blind ruling, William Stirling Maxwell's initials embossed in the leather front and back. Front board is detached, some normal light rubbing, back board has cloth (? ) tape at inside hinge holding it on and partly obscuring the Kier bookplate. Also has bookplate of De Guinzbourg, the later spy and sword version. Small paper flaw on bottom margin title page (a small hole) , otherwise clean and unmarked. A very scarce little book, this is apparently the c1830 version of the 1819 first, but there seem to be no copies of the 1819 anywhere. Just a very few copies of the 1830 Harvey edition, this one appears to be the same as the copy in the British Library, with no plate. No copies for sale and no auction records. Berlin: Alfred Schall. Good with no dust jacket. 1901. Hardcover. Vii + 128 pps. Tan cloth boards with beautiful gilt and teal blue decorations with Arabic and German script, spine has gilt and red. Covers have a bit of shelf soil and wear but quite minor. Inside has lovely golden floral endpapers with the bookplate of Victor de Guinzbourg, sometime WWII spy and proverb collector. On the blank facing the title page there is a very faint inscription in blue ink with Hermann Barth's signature. Each page has lovely blue floral borders. Original olive green card covers with black are sun faded at the spine, bit of corner curl, interior has a signature (unknown) on the title page, otherwise clean and unmarked. Paris: Librairie Des Bibliophiles. Good with no dust jacket. 1878. Hardcover. Vi + 160 pps. In French, Dark green/blue marble boards with brown leather spine and gold gilt lettering, 5 raised bands. Corners and spine tips a little rubbed. Interior marbled end papers have a golden small bookplate of Henri Bachimont Bresles (the French composer) with the early bookplate of Lt. Col. De Guinzbourg, the spy and noted proverb collector. Bresles' bookplate has made a white ghost on Guinzbroug's plate. Red and black title page, paper is toned and a bit crisp, green silk page marker has left a small stain, otherwise clean and unmarked. A nice provenance. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 160 pages .

Lerida, Barcela: Sol y Benet; Subirana. Good with no dust jacket. 1916. Softcover. xvi, 666,[iv]. In Spanish. Cream paper covers with a lovely red and black border. Paper is a bit toned and some edge chipping, spine head and tail a little chipped. Interior paper somewhat browned, nice head and tail pieces throughout, pages have never been separated. Interior back cover has some small numbers written in ink, paper has a large watermark that says "Vilaseca" otherwise clean and unmarked. Indicates it was printed on the 23rd of April, 1916, the 300th anniversary of the death of Cervantes. Hard to find.; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 666 pages .

Weimar: Friedrich Voigt. Good with no dust jacket. 1859. First Edition. Hardcover. xvi, 276 pp. Latin text in bold, German text in fraktur. Original hard boards are dull brown with some minor wear, bump to front bottom corner, original black paper spine label with bright gilt a bit chipped. Spine tips bit worn Interior has stamp from a Czech museum on the inside front cover, book plate of Lt. Colonel V.S.M. de Guinzbourg, the famous proverbs collector. There is moderate normal foxing throughout but otherwise clean and unmarked, sturdy binding. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 276 pages .

" Ouvrage tire´ des plus celebres autheurs de ce temps Full leather contemporary binding, corners rubbed, spine head rubbed, bottom spine rubbed and compartment leather partially gone, 5 raised bands, scuffed lack on the rear. Interior no blanks, paper generally aged with some foxing throughout, bottom corner of page 7 torn off affecting text, but otherwise complete and good. Bookplate of proverb collector and reputed WWII spy, de Guinzbourg, this the first iteration as Lt. Col. A curious book of proverbs, long attributed to the Count of Cramail (who had written a Comedy of Proverbs) but more recently attributed to a plagiarism of Fleury de Bellingen's 1653 work on proverbs. With the bookplate of man of mystery, spy, and collector of proverbs, de Guinzbourg. Olive green cloth with red spine label. Some general light rubbing but overall good and handsome. Half title is foxed, verso of half title has a stamp of the Madrid national library, text paper is browned, , first few pages coming away at the gutter. Some page turning chips, page 13/14 has a 1" clean tear at the top, otherwise clean and nice. In Spanish. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 412 pages .

Spine says "Ne Oublie," an inner leaf has "Pages from the Notebook" and the front cover has "Inveni Fontem" in the squares. No date but 1937. Printer from rear colophon. Octavo. Cream cloth spine with blue title is a bit age darkened, especially at the top. Hard paper covers in beige with blue pen and ink fountains in squares, minor normal age to the covers. Piacenza: Torchi Del Majno. Good with no dust jacket. 1821. Hardcover. [iv] 288 pp. With the bookplate of noted collector of proverb books and mysterious man of the world, de Guinzbourg. Original marbled hard paper boards with leather spine, black and gilt spine label. Someone has shellacked the spine in the long ago giving it a very shiny and slightly crackly appearance. Boards have some normal wear and rubbing at the edges. Interior front hinge starting to separate, minor foxing very occasionally, a small bit of humidity staining just at the top edge at the back of the book. An interesting collection of proverbs with nice provenance. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 288 pages .

Book has beige paper softcover with black text on covers and spine. Covers are loose, but still attached to spine, wear on covers and spine. Text is clear and unmarked. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 208 pages .

S.L.: S.N.. Good with no dust jacket. 1800. Hardcover. 21,45,38,30,21 pp. Bound in full red morocco with gilt ruling, blindstamped coat of arms to front and another blinstamped mark to back. Book plates of Kier House, Victor de Guinzbourg, and William Stirling, along with a handwritten noted signed "WS" on the first blank explaining that this seems to be a reprint of the English edition of "Select Proverbs" London 1707, in Stirling's copy of which is an inscription noting that the "author is Johawnis Mapletoft" Binding is clean and solid with minimal wear, just a bit of rubbing, interior has interesting bookplates, otherwise clean and unmarked. Seems to correspond to OCLC 800678850, which is shown as an octavo. This copy is in 8s but it is a 12mo size. Very scarce indeed, only 4 copies in WorldCat, one auction record from 1907, otherwise virtually unknown. A nice little book with a lovely provenance. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall .

Italian on left, English translation facing. 1800s leather binding with what looks to be Kier House embossure to front and back, some rubbing and wear, new leather spine. Interior marbled end papers, hinges cracked, old repairs to gutters throughout the work, not affecting text. A bit fragile but charming. OCLC 561609265. Quite scarce. British Library has it, and a few other spots, but most of the WorldCat listings are ebooks. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 59 pages .

Frankfurt: J. Saurium. Good with no dust jacket. 1605. Hardcover. 70 leaves, unpaginated, renewed end papers and blanks. In octavos. With the bookplate of Col. Victor De Guinzbourg, who was in counterintelligence prior to WWII and, according to his family, used a number of different names -- he also happened to collect books of proverbs, the book passed to Robert Easton after his death. Very attractively bound in modern 3/4 leather with gilt ruling, dark blue marbled boards, five raised bands to the spine with gilt florets in the panels, gilt spine label. End papers are marbled to match the boards, new blanks, the text is clean and bright, just lightly toned, pages never separated. Some pages have small wear to the fore-edges as people have tried to thumb through the unopened pages, the bookplate on the end paper, otherwise clean and bright.
