Boston: George Adams. Good with no dust jacket. 1846. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. [16], 248, 40, 24 pp. 24 pages of ads at the rear. Octavo. Brown paper hardcover ads with brown cloth spine. Covers are age darkened and spotted, corners and edges rubbed, spine cover starting to split away at bottom and top joints, but still holding. Inside front cover has a green ad pasted down, first free endpaper has a beautiful signature of George White & Co, with his address in Boston. Interestingly, White has an entry in the directory of residents where it indicates that he sold West Indian goods, but there is not business listing under West Indian Goods (which does, indeed, have it's own section). Text is somewhat browned, some foxing and occasional spotting throughout, foxing is worst at the back where the ads are, perhaps from the glue used for the rear pastedown, otherwise clean and unmarked. Illustrated with over sixty Pages of Colored Lithographs." Full dark green leather with blind ruling and brilliant gilt, rebacked with original spine laid down, polished marble edges, original blue endpapers (rear endpaper replaced) with old owner bookplate. Copyright page ihas pencil notation "1851 Sept 10 Gift of Hon George S. Hillard of Boston". A plea for the holding together of the Union and against secession. Hillard, who apparently gave the book to a library, was an attorney, legislator and author, served as a member of the Senate and was U. S. Attorney before retiring to private law practice. Both covers have separated from the spine and are loose but still present. Brown paper covers are bit grubby, front corner chipped away, spine chipped, back cover has long 2" wide lack plus many chips and has come off but is still present. Pictorial dust jacket, very machine age dust jacket is missing many pieces, flaps still present, now in Mylar to hold it together. Illustrated with wonderful images, as well as b/w pictures of stamps 1847-1947 Book covers are blue, just a hint of wear at edges. Interior is clean and unmarked, paper is soft and some pages have clean tears with archival repair but otherwise good. Starting with the 1930s, there are a number of stamps that have been pasted down on the image -- almost 100% are cancelled. Original dark brown kraft card covers with art nouveau design has minor wear, bit of chipping to spine bottom. Interior has light humidity staining at bottom right corner throughout, strongest at front, short tear at bottom gutter of first blank, some rusting of the staples particularly at the bottom near the back of the book but otherwise good, clean and unmarked. Hammond Trumbull, President of the Connecticut Historical Society and a number of letters written to Frank B. Gay, who was then the Recording Secretary of the C. H. S. , dated 1889 having to do C. H. S. Letters are from Joseph Hopkins Twichell, the Harvard Historical Society, J. W. Perry (State Rep. ) , John W. Stedman (V. P. Of CHS) , N. H. Allen (? ) and George Walker who appears to be the pastor of the First Church in Hartford, in addition to a few letters for which we cannot make out the signature.
