Description:
New York: Benjamin Decasseres At the Blackstone Publishers. Good with no dust jacket. 1936. First Edition. Pamphlet. Booklets 1-9 and 11 of The Decasseres Books, all published in 1936. The booklets are in fair-good condition. Booklets No. 1 and 2 have the most wear, with chipping and loss around the edges, #1 also has a sticker scar on the front cover. The other 8 booklets all have varying degrees of chipping and edgewear. Some of the books still have the loose ad flyer for the set (of 12) tucked inside the front cover. Some of the book blocks are pulling away from the interior of the spines but all are holding together well. These booklets are scarce at all, finding 10 of them at once is surprising! Benjamin DeCasseres (sometimes De Casseres) was a Sephardic New Yorker, journalist and writer, who greatly admired Nietzsche and hyper-individualism, yet who decried both capitalism and socialism. These scarce booklets put forth some of his unusual philosophy. He was read and admired by H. L.…

Folio in blind stamped pale peach leather with clasps, in a cream linen box. Condition of the book and the box are near fine. 25.6 x 37.6 cm, unnumbered 167 ff (334 pp). A stunning facsimile edition of the Divine Comedy held at the Seminary Library at Padua, acquired by their librarian in 1720 as part of the book collection of the Paduan count Alfonso Alvarotti. It is profusely and richly illustrated in gold foil and colours, with large illuminations at the beginning of each of the three canticles, consisting of historiated initials, surrounded by a frieze of vines, flowers, and drolleries of human and animal figures. As well, there are large and glorious initials on many of the pages. The illustrations , which cleverly echo the part of the story they are illuminating, are unusual and a bit mysterious.
