From 1966 to 1977, the Boulder poet and teacher published 14 "the" issues, this one being number 12. Many well-known poets would often contribute works. This issue is divided into two sections. The first section contains poems by Carmen Vigil, Denise Levertov, David Meltzer, Phil Garrison, Kenneth Rexroth, Don Katzman, Jack Hirschman, and Snorri Sturluson. Kathmandu, Nepal: Bardo Matrix, 1974. First Edition, First Printing. Octavo (8 1/8 x 5 inches; 216 x 128 mm), [10 leaves], in stapled wrappers (soft cover). A collection of seven poems printed on delicate rice paper, one of 500 copies issued by Bardo Matrix in Kathmandu. The cover features a fabulous photo of Ford by the Beat poet, photographer, and Bardo Matrix co-founder Ira Cohen (the photo is mounted to the cover). There are also several woodcuts, including a skeleton template designed by Ford. No. 3 in Bardo Matrix's Starstreams Poetry Series. Ford (1908-2002) was a prolific author whose first poem appeared in The New Yorker while he was still a teenager. He co-wrote the book "The Young and Evil" (Paris: Obelisk Press, 1933) with Parker Tyler; some consider the book the first gay novel. Small Quarto (10 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches; 265 x 215 mm), 36 pages, in original orange wrappers, titles to upper wrapper in black, and housed in a black slipcase. INSCRIBED by Belgian Surrealist artist and writer E.L.T. Mesens on the half title to French Surrealist artist and poet Georges Hugnet: "À Georges Hugnet, / très cordialement / Mesens / décembre 1933." A wonderful association between two Surrealists. This alphabet book, written entirely in French, features short poems or phrases following each letter of the alphabet. Paul Éluard has written a preface, while the frontispiece collage is by Mesens himself. One of 500 numbered copies printed on Featherweight vélin, following 3 copies on Japon nacré and 13 on Hollande van Gelder. A collection of 24 poems, including some of his most famous works, such as The Road Not Taken, Mending Wall, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, and others. The binding is rather odd, to say the least. The publishers took simulated linen paper and pasted it over the original self-wrappers. They cut a panel in the front cover exposing only "Robert Frost" in the title. (Indeed, you can see the original lettering if you hold both wrappers up to the light.) CONDITION: Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. A bit of soiling to the top edge, internally clean, bright, and unmarked. The price-clipped dust jacket has very light edge wear and a bit of toning to the lower panel.

Measures 5 5/8 x 5 inches (143 x 128 mm) when folded. SIGNED by Michael McClure, one of the authors featured in this broadside for Auerhahn publications. The broadside features excerpts of poetry by McClure, John Wieners, Philip Lamantia, and Philip Whalen. The idea was to promote Auerhahn's books and pamphlets. Although the broadside doesn't contain a publication date, we estimate 1959, based on the broadside's list of forthcoming publications. Dave Haselwood founded Auerhahn in 1958 and published works that increased the influence of the Beat movement. His publications "were known to those on the scene as thoughtfully designed, beautifully produced aesthetic objects showcasing some of the finest voices of the 'new poetry.'" In a rather ill-tempered but entertaining introduction, she wonders why there's so much bad poetry, which she calls "rubbish." She goes on to extol the importance of form and presentation in poetry.
