Description:
New York: Harcourt, Brace & Company, 1933. First American Edition, 1st Printing. Small Octavo (7 7/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 200 x 135 mm), ix, [1], 318 pages, in blue cloth, titles in silver to spine, in a printed dust jacket (hard cover). Biographical essays of some politicians and economists: Lloyd George, Bonar Law, Churchill, Trotsky, Malthus, Marshall, etc. Eight black-and-white plates, separated by tissue guards. One of Keynes's more interesting essays is about Trotsky, who had written "Where Is Britain Going?" Keynes is scathing: "Its dogmatic tone about our affairs, where even the author's flashes of insight are clouded by his inevitable ignorance of what he is talking about, cannot commend it to an English reader." But he hastens to add: "Yet there is a certain style about Trotsky." This book is quite scarce in the original dust jacket. CONDITION: Some rubbing to the cloth, bumping to spine edges, and a bit of fading to the spine titles. Internally, slight toning to pages and some creases in a… Read More

Description:
Detroit: The Radio League of the Little Flower, 1933. First Edition. Small Octavo pamphlet measuring 7 3/4 x 5 inches (197 x 128 mm), [16] pages, in stapled printed wrappers.
Transcript of a radio broadcast by Father Coughlin in which he says government action so far has amounted only to a "lateral attack" against the Depression. What's needed, he says, is a "frontal attack," and rails against money changers, international bankers, the Federal Reserve, and the gold standard.
Coughlin's rant is actually fairly moderate compared to his views some years later, when he was openly anti-Semitic and sympathetic to Hitler and Mussolini.
OCLC shows only a handful of institutional holdings. SCARCE.
CONDITION: Some edge wear and soiling with a couple of small nicks to the wrappers and a light vertical crease throughout the bottom third of the pamphlet. Internally clean and unmarked. A Very Good copy.

Description:
[London]: The Pamphleteer [A.J. Valpy], 1821. Scarce pamphlet featuring five letters by Jean Baptiste Say in response to "Principles of Political Economy" by Robert Thomas Malthus. Say (1767-1832) was a giant in free-market economics and wrote these letters criticizing the economic views of Malthus (1766-1834), whose "Principles of Political Economy" appeared in 1820.
Malthus, of course, was probably better known for his controversial earlier work, "An Essay on the Principles of Population," in which he predicted that population growth would outstrip global food production, leading to mass starvation and death. In terms of economics, their disagreements centered on the causes of depressions. Both men wrote in the wake of the depression and high unemployment that followed the Napoleonic Wars (hence the reference to "general stagnation of commerce" in the title of Say's collection of letters). Malthus believed that depressions were caused by general overproduction of goods, while Say thought general… Read More
