Charles Scribner's Sons, 1932. First Edition with Scribner's Seal and Scribner's A on copyright page. Burnt orangy/brown boards with gold gilt on upper boards and spine. Author's inscription is tipped in and the cast of Tobacco Road has inscribed and signed also. In researching this I understand that the Marion Wilson Waldrip (whom this book is inscribed to) was a frequent attendee of this play and always was invited back stage to talk with the cast members. He was said to have seen this play so many times that he had rubbed an indentation with his cane in the wood floor where he was sitting. Some of the cast members that inscribed and signed this book were: Howard Banks, who played Capt. Tim. Dick Lee, (Henry Peabody) ; Henry Hull, Leon Ames, Ada Sester, Priscilla Knowles and others. Of course Erskin Caldwell also has signed a tipped in paper to: Marion Wilson Waldrip. This is a lovely copy in very nice condition. The etchings have been printed rom the artist's plates by Charles Furth in New york. This copy is NUMBER 35 and it is signed by the illustrator - Samuel Chamberlain. Laid in is a slip called This Month. It states that this edition has one dozen etchings by S. Chamberlain, and the prints having been pulled by hand from the original plates. The size of the book is 7 x 10 and there are 504 pages. The type used is Times Roman, possibly for the first time in this country. The paper is called Ragston and was made for this book by the Curtis Paper Company. The binding is of rust-colored legal buckram, stamped in gold. SLIPCASE is green with brown spine and pasteown of title and the number 35. This Slipcase is in Very Good condition. The book itself is very FINE. Tight, unmarked pages.
