1st edition pictorial boards. Large octavo 133 pp., col. frontis., b/w ill., Gladys Henriques Lister (1887–1957) was the seventh of ten children, and was born in Hawthorn, Victoria. Her family had emigrated to Australia from America, though her mother's ancestry was Irish. After leaving school, Gladys Lister studied painting under Julian Ashton; married in 1913.Lister's stories used what happened to her life, as well as current events. During the Second World War, some British children were evacuated to Australia, and her book Jennifer Stands By featured evacuees and their adventures. Gladys Lister had always owned a pony, to which she ascribed her love of horses. Includes descriptions of post-war sea voyages made by Lister to North America, England and Europe.

Top edge of pages gilt, others uncut, pages clean and tight, some wear to bottom spine, frontispiece portrait William Dampier, 16 black and white plate illustrations, table of contents, appendix, lacks the folding map. A handsome and bright copy of this lovely book, internally very fresh and clean. The pages are uncut pages to side and bottom and gilded to top.The Armstrong binding is fresh, vivid and clean with minor evidence of age damage to the top and bottom of spine. A BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATED ITALIAN TRAVEL BOOK by a Pulitzer Prize winning author. Though the less famous then her collaboration with Maxfield Parrish this collection of nine essays is none-the-less appealing. Mr. Peixotto's art was far more familiar then his name, he had been a extremely successful illustrator of magazines and periodicals. Scribner's sent the young artist to Italy with Mrs. Wharton and then kept him at various points of the Mediterranean for over a year.

Lady Brassey died on this voyage, and was buried at sea, at the age of 47 in 1887. Brassey, who finished the manuscript, was a man with the sea in his blood, and is still remembered as the founder and first editor of 'Brassey's Naval Annual', and in 1876 to 1877 is said to have made the first circumnavigation of the world by a private yacht, the steam-assisted three-masted topsail-yard schooner 'Sunbeam', the same vessel used in this journey.
