Description:
N.P.: N.P., 1970. Very good. 72 drawings in pencil, watercolor and/or crayon all either drawn directly on artist's board, or on sheets mounted to artist's board; the boards measuring from 14" x 10" to 15" x 12". 33 have proposed fabric swatches attached, with an additional two that are loose. Generally very good or better with overall light to moderate edge wear, though some corners show heavy wear; one sheet lacks the board to which it was presumably mounted. This is a collection of costume designs and fabric swatches by an accomplished artist who signed them "dik." The collection contains eight drawings for The Marriage of Figaro, five for Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine, 28 for Cabaret and 31 for Anything Goes. Each is a detailed character study and several of the characters are shown in multiple costumes. For Cabaret, there are eight different drawings for the character of Sally Bowles, five different for Fraulein Schneider and three for Fraulein Kos. Anything Goes includes five different for…

Description:
Los Angeles, California, 1923. Very good. 7¼" x 11¼". String tied cloth over flexible card. 62 pages with 94 black and white photographs adhesive mounted. Most photos measure between 2¾" x 4½" to 5½" x 3¼" with six 5" x 7" or larger; most are captioned. Album very good plus with minor imperfections, photos near fine or better. This album is filled with stunning images of two disparate genres of performance art: live theater and window displays—and the window displays are devoted exclusively to the Fowler Brothers book store, then located at 747 South Broadway in Los Angeles. While not denoted as such, the colleague who sold the album to us says it was acquired with a scrapbook that was compiled by the actor shown here: a Richard H. Sloan who appeared in many Los Angeles plays from 1920-1926 and was stage manager of the Literary Theatre of Los Angeles. We're told that the scrapbook showed that Sloan also created dioramas as well as designed and built sets for some performances. The first…

Description:
Berkeley/Sonoma, CA: Ladies Against Women/National Rutabaga Co. (printers), 1985. Very good. 21½" x 21½". Cotton banner. Very good with creases at folds and a few soil spots. This is a humorous, tongue-in-cheek banner or bandanna printed on cotton by Ladies Against Women (LAW), a satirical performance group from Berkeley, California. Organized in 1980, LAW were known as a "political parody troupe" who performed throughout the Bay Area. In 1984 they traveled to Dallas for the Republican National Convention and organized a "deficit bake sale," setting up an ironing board outside a prayer breakfast organized by President Reagan and selling Hostess Twinkies for $9 billion each. The most recent coverage we could find of the group was for a performance in 1992, though their (minimalist) website shows comments as late as 2020. A 1991 newspaper article quoted a male audience member who found them to be "about 15 percent funny. They could have balanced their attack better against men." The banner…
