Very good: front cover wavy, dust soiled and with some flecks of white paint; leaves and photos a bit wavy, else near fine. An interesting industrial album depicting Jugokomercijin Sajam which appears to be a business selling used cars and industrial equipment. Description:
South Bend, Indiana, 1938. Full limp leather bound with rivets. 32 pages with 76 black and white photographs hing mounted, several to a page, vertically overlapping. Most photos measure 2¾" x 4 ½" and most are captioned in small typescripts that are scotch taped to the pages. Album very good with moderate wear and scuffing; internally near fine or better. A working realtor's album highlighting his listings in Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. His highlights may not have been entirely accurate as we note that a commercial realtor named Rufus W. Smith in South Bend, Indiana was found in 1933 to be engaged in the sale of real estate without a license while participating in a fraudulent land deal. One listing is for a huge mixed use building that contained 22 apartments, 12 stores and four offices. The photographs for this and another commercial building provide fantastic street level views with lots of business signage. The book also has several listings for farms, including one with 304 acres and a… Read More

Description:
London and Northampton: Robert Church & Roberts Limited, 1914. 8¼" x 10". Full red pebbled leather, front board titled in gilt. 40 pages of thick card leaves, with 40 black and white photographs inserted into windows. Photos measure 6" x 8" and none are captioned. Album good: moderate overall wear, heavily shaken but all held securely, small tears to the windows of many pages; photos very good plus or better. This is a corporate promotional album for Robert Church & Roberts Limited, a British clothing manufacturer. We know the company was active as early as 1888 and as late as 1918. We're able to date the photos due to one that shows a Singer Sewing wall calendar dated July 1914. Thus, many of these photos were likely taken at the cusp of a major change in labor, with many women soon shifting to work in war related industries. The images show working conditions at factories that made women's robes, blouses, undergarments and other clothing. The firm had a factory in London at 1 to 7 Long Lane as… Read More

Description:
Mostly Georgia, 1984. Very good +. Eight commercial photo albums with mylar-covered gummed leaves containing a combined 969 color photos + large embroidered riding scarf, four jacket patches and a painted, heavily used helmet. Most photos measure approximately 3½" x 5" to 4" x 6" and around fifteen percent or more are captioned on versos. Generally very good plus or better, one of the albums good only due to water damage, a couple of albums a bit grubby as well; photos generally near fine or better. This is a collection of nearly 1,000 photographs and a few other items compiled by an outlaw biker from Georgia. Someone self-identifies in one of the albums, and there's a pistol license as well as an addressed envelope with the same name, but we can't be sure he's the compiler. At least two albums are from 1976 and 1977, and a lot of the photos in those albums involve members of The Outlaws; the other six albums, as well as the patches and helmet, focus on the Remaining Few South Georgia (RFSG)… Read More

Description:
Various Places in Texas; Shreveport and New Orleans, Louisiana; Macon, Georgia, 1880. Good. 6" x 4½". Commercial album of full leather over heavy boards and adorned with brass clasps. Three preliminary leaves followed by 15 thick card windowed leaves, each with two photographs inserted (one each side), and another laid in for a total of 31. 26 are cartes de visite, the rest are tintypes and a total of seven photos are hand colored. Some photos are captioned as explained below. Album about good, with text block fully detached from boards which are still attached to each other at the spine; pages with moderate dust soiling and scattered staining; a few windows torn; photos generally very good. This is a family photo album compiled by a Mollie Hargrove of Harrison County, Texas. Mollie was born around 1846 in Franklin County, North Carolina and as of the 1850 census she had moved to Texas. Her father, William Richard Hargrove, was born in 1797 in Granville, North Carolina and apparently moved to… Read More

[norway], 1917. 6" x 7½". Full burgundy cloth album, gilt title on front cover. 24 pages with 28 black and white photographs inserted into album slots. All but a few photos measure 3 5/8" x 4¾" (90x119mm). Album very good with light wear and a bit shaken but holding fine; photos generally very good plus or better. An excellent album documenting family and friends seemingly unaffected by World War I. Ten photos show a costume party and depict an outstanding array of dress including a woman with various words printed all over her clothing, as well as Indians, emperors, geishas and more. Three RPPCs of a family with a Kristiania (Oslo) postmark along with 3 photos of the HNoMS Eidsvold (the two that are captioned with this name are the only captions in the album) lead us to believe this was compiled by a Norwegian family. The Eidsvold was a Norweigan coastal defense ship launched in 1900 and sunk in Norvik Harbor in 1940 during the German invasion. There are two other photos showing water craft in a… Read More

Description:
Croton Point, New York, 1894. 13½" x 10¼". Full original black morocco, rivet bound, spine rebacked to style and rivets renewed. 23 leaves interleaved with tissue, each with a 6½" x 8½" albumen photograph adhesive mounted recto only; four additional leaves with news clippings inserted into mylar sleeves. Photos generally near fine or better. Album is fine: some restoration to board edges, endpapers renewed; four new leaves inserted at front for news clippings. Leaves very good with toning, and occasional, chipping at edges. The American Canoe Association was founded in 1880 by 15 avid canoeists. Today, the organization boasts over 30,000 members and this photo album documents its fifth-ever general meet (and its 14th overall) held along the Hudson River. Canoeists made camp at Croton Point on its northwestern side facing Haverstraw Bay, from July 13 to July 28, 1894. A number of newspapers reported on the event with headlines such as "Preparations made . . . in a blaze of sun and glory-Dainty… Read More

Description:
Barrow (Now Utqiagvik), Alaska, 1959. Very good. 7" x 11". String tied, cloth over wood. 47 leaves with 109 black and white photographs adhesive mounted rectos only with another 8 laid in; 57 photos measure 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" or larger, the rest a mix of sizes; several are captioned. Album very good with moderate wear; photos generally very good or better. This is a photo album with approximately 80 photographs showing Native Americans in the northernmost regions of the United States. It was compiled by a Caucasian man who appears to have been in the military, but he may have been a civilian employee who we think was there to work at the Point Barrow Long Range Radar Site as a dentist. The compiler is seen in at least 15-20 photos and we know his name, and that he was a dentist, due to an included award of merit he received for his service in Point Barrow. Point Barrow is one of the northernmost cities in the world; it's north of the Arctic Circle and today has a population of around 5,000. At the… Read More

Description:
Mostly Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, Michigan, 1940. Good. 7¼" x 11". Riveted faux leather over flexible card. 20 leaves with 64 black and white photographs. Around half are inserted in corner mounts, the other half adhered (all but one rectos only), and nine are laid in. Photos measure from 2¾" x 3¾" to 3 1/8" x 4¾". Album good with heavy wear loss of some surface covering as well as complete separation of the covering of the front cover, which is entirely lacking from the rear; photos generally near fine or better. This is an album that was almost certainly created by an employee of Carl F. Skinner & Sons, a Kalamazoo, Michigan distributor of the Power House Candy Bar. Power House was popular for several decades and was manufactured at the time by the Walter H. Johnson Candy Company out of Chicago, and was later part of Peter Paul. All the photos relate to Power House and its distribution. Approximately 37 photos show painted store windows with Power House advertising, including many different… Read More

Colorado, 1954. Near fine. 11" x 14". Full leather post binder. 120 pages with 338 black and white photos adhesive mounted. 68 photos measure 4½" x 6½" or larger, the rest measure from 2¼" x 3½" to 3" x 5" and all are captioned. Album and contents near fine or better. This is an album of well composed images documenting a trip throughout the state of Colorado in 1954. It's organized into the following twelve sections, each with a handsomely designed separate title page in colored stencil with an outline map and the following titles: Million Dollar Highway, Box Canyon, Colorado National Monument, Glenwood Springs, Glenwood Canyon, Highway 6 to Central City, Clear Creek Canyon, Central City, Berthoud Pass, Rocky Mountain National Park, Big Thompson Canyon, Homeward Bound. This apparently was originally part of a pair of albums as the first section is numbered "11" and the compiler made a point of creating gorgeous albums of travels, as item #45, below, comes from the same family. Leather over flexible card with two-hole punched leaves, lacking original rivets and later string tied at the lower hole. 86 pages with 216 black and white photographs inserted into corner mounts + a hand-drawn line map; approximately 30 photos were commercially produced. Nearly all photos are captioned with narrative descriptions on album pages, the album as a whole containing approximately 4000 words; many with brief captions in the negative or on photo versos as well. Album very good with moderate wear; photos generally very good or better; occasional smudging of captions resulting in the loss of some words but rarely impacting overall understanding of any particular description. This is a photo album filled with well composed and heavily captioned photographs which document numerous locales in the South Pacific and their local populaces. It was compiled by a member of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy while touring the… Read More

Morris Ranch, Texas, 1992. Very good. Two items: (1) Spiral-bound 11" x 8½" printed book + (2) Cloth over thin card commercial photograph album measuring 7" x 10½" with 32 cyanotypes and 43 B&W photos adhesive mounted to 32 pages; the remaining 68 pages are blank. Photos range from 1" x 1" to 3½" x 5½" and five are captioned; see description for further information. Album, book and photographs all very good: light edge wear to covers and some light scattered spotting. This is a pair of items which provide a unique glimpse into the history of Morris Ranch, Texas. The first item is a book, They Came To Morris Ranch, compiled in 1992 by the Morris Ranch Cemetery Association. Now a ghost town located just outside Fredericksburg, about two hours west of Austin, we learn from the book that "in its heyday, it was the largest breeding and training facility for thoroughbred race horses in the State of Texas and the second largest in the United States." Description:
Various places, 1964. Very good. 14¼" x 12¼". Embossed brown faux leather over boards, screwbound album. Pp. 44 with 349 photographs, all adhesive mounted. Photos of varying size with most around 2½" x 4¼" and nearly all are captioned on the page or on the photo. Very good: album lightly scuffed and a bit threadbare at corners; photos generally very good plus with a bit of scattered spotting. This heavily captioned album depicts threshing bees and shows throughout the Midwestern United States and Canada. Throughout much of the history of agriculture, threshing was laborious and time-consuming. Before the invention of the threshing machine in 1786, about a quarter of farming labor could be spent on it. A threshing bee was traditionally a time for neighbors to pool their labor to get the season's threshing done. Newspaper accounts we found online mention "old-fashioned" threshing bees as early as 1945. These bees typically involved people coming together to showcase (and buy and sell)… Read More

N.P., 1943. Near fine. 7" x 11¾". Flexible faux leather post-bound album. 98 pages, the first 38 with 109 adhesive mounted photographs and rest of the pages are blank. Photos measure 3" x 4" and approximately three quarters are captioned. Album and contents near fine or better, a few photos a bit loose from adhesive. This is a photo album containing 109 images from 31 well-known movies of the 1930s and early 1940s. Each photo was taken from the screen while the photographer was viewing the film inside a theater. About three-quarters of the images have handwritten captions, mostly the year of the film or the name of the actor(s) seen in the shot, though a few have a brief synopsis of the scene. We see Ronald Reagan and Errol Flynn in Santa Fe Trail, and several photographs show scenes from the 1935 film Mutiny On The Bounty. There are a few shots from The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Dr. Kildare's Strange Case. Several of the films starred Wallace Beery; we see him with Lionel Barrymore and… Read More

[Dearborn, Michigan], 1971. Good. 11 5/8" x 9" commercially produced faux leather photograph album containing 70 leaves with 49 photographs, 32 items of ephemera, and news clippings, taped or pasted in. Most photos measure 5¼" x 3¼" or 8" x 10". Album good: lacking backstrip and moderately worn and soiled. Internally very good with moderate edge wear to one item, some items loose, and some offsetting from newspaper clippings. This is a scrapbook documenting the first three years of the Youth Group of the Dearborn Association for Retarded Children (YDARC), which formed in 1969. The Dearborn Association for Retarded Children (DARC) was formally established in 1954, following a 1950 incident in which seven children were dismissed from the Dearborn Public Schools Special Program. According to the Arc Dearborn website, after the incident several local families came together to create services and programs for their intellectually disabled loved ones.
