Rebound in a commercial binding of dark brown buckram with titles stamped in gold on spine and textblock edges trimmed. Endpapers a very stiff, thick ‘faux leather’ cardstock. First blank of original book with both titles written in ink in an old hand. “An Essay on Learning” with a single line “rubber stamp” under title having been “sanded” but no other evidence of coming from an institution. There are no alterations to “Letters from Italy.” We cannot determine if half-title is called for in “An Essay,” (as with second edition), if so not present here.

London: H. Hughes, 1772. Third. Hardcover . Used - very good. 288pp. Third Edition. (1st ed. was 1769, 2nd 1770). Bound in marbled covered boards and 1/4 mottled leather, rubbed. Spine with 6 compartments, gilt and red title, bright. Text is square and tight with minor stains to corners of FFE and front pastedown corresponding with possible glueing down of corners.

Louise Ward Watkins was a California women’s rights activist (1890-1974), active in the cause of woman’s suffrage, the Japan American Society and Republican politics. She ran for the United States Senate in 1938.
