The author was head gardener at the gardens at Pitt White, Uplyme, Devon, and at the time of writing had in his care perhaps the most comprehensive collection of hardy bamboos in Europe. This book was the first of its kind to deal with the full range of bamboos hardy in temperate climates. In it the author gives a straightforward consistent description of the features of each species.
