Description:
4to. Stuttgart: W. Nitzschke, [1878]. 4to, pictorial chromolithographed thick leaves comprising 26 plates of images. Original boards, modern cloth backstrip. Boards lightly soiled and edges worn, ink marks on the plain lower board, hinges reinforced, pages with a few marks and two old tape repairs. A very good copy of a great rarity. § First edition. First demonstrative picture book by Meggendorfer, an "absolute rarity" (Krahe, Spielwelt). No copy in North America or the UK; four copies in Europe (Germany and Switzerland). No copy listed on ABPC; one copy in European auction records (Ketterer Kunst 2011). Note: one image in the book is dated “1878”; also, at the front is an image lettered “ABC” and, as the book is 26 pages (each page perhaps with a common denominator that is self-evident in German), it is perhaps an ABC book itself.Krahe 45. - Krahe, Spielwelt 43 und S. 38-39, S. 180 (mit Abbildung). - Ries S. 710, 1. “Erste Ausgabe. - Erstes Anschauungsbilderbuch Meggendorfers, eine… Read More

Description:
3 vols. New York: Harper, 1908-10-12. 3 vols., various paginations and illustrations, fine copies in the original cloth-backed pictorial boards, all enclosed in a handsome custom quarter morocco and silk folding box. § First edition, fine copies of these pioneer books in which the novel physical structure of the book (a hole through all the pages, a trapezoid shape) is an integral element of the story. Newell was enormously popular in his day as an illustrator for all manner of books and periodicals. “Art historian Edgar Richardson described Newell’s work as a forerunner of ‘the gentle history of the absurd’ later so successfully cultivated by the New Yorker magazine.” Grolier Children’s 100: 59 (The Hole Book).

e. London: March 8, 1825 [i.e. London: John Linnell, 1874]. Large folio, title-page and 21 plates printed on India paper. Mounted on large sheets as issued, enclosed in a blue morocco box (slightly worn) lettered in gilt. Bookplate of Robert Pirie. § A very good set of the posthumous edition printed from the original plates (with the word “proof” removed) for Linnell by Holdgate Brothers. The India paper set is the best printing of these famous plates which comprise Blake’s major single achievement as a printmaker after the illuminated books. Illustrations of the Book of Job was Blake’s last completed prophetic book: the text, a series of biblical quotations, is above and below each image. “It was produced while Blake was still working on Jerusalem, his most obscure book; yet the illustrations are Blake’s most lucid; and they are the supreme example of his reading the Bible in its spiritual sense” (S. Foster Damon, A Blake Dictionary, p. 217). “The modest size of the central panels… Read More
