FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. 16, 172, 33 [34 blank], 19th century half calf, marbled boards (slightly rubbed( gilt spine (rubbed), morocco label; front joint cracked (but firm), with the contemporary autograph "C. B. Morgan" and an amorial bookplate on the front paste-down end-paper, bookplate of Reginald L. Hine and his autograph on recto of front free end-paper. Dalrymple (1737-1808), a hydrographer for the East India Company, is perhaps better-known as the author of An Historical Collection of the Several Voyages and Discoveries in the South Pacific Ocean in 1769–71.

London: Printed for F. C. and J. Rivington..., 1806. 12mo, 190 x 108 mms., pp. xxvii [xxviii Errata], 400, uncut, recently recased in gray boards, paper label on spine. Plumptre (1771 - 1832) includes a number of his own compositions in this anthology, but somewhat extraordinarily includes a poem by Charlotte Richardson [née Smith; 1775 - 1825] that had just been published in the same year. The volume was a success, and he extended it to three volumes in 1808.

FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 186 x 113 mms., pp. xvi, 280, contemporary tree calf, gilt border on covers, rebacked, new red morocco label; large triangular piece cut from title-page with loss, facsimile of title-page tipped in. This work is usually attributed to John Aikin (1747 - 1822), a physician and author of various political and biographical works. The genesis of this book came, Aikin says in his Preface, when he and various friends lamented the absence of a good collection of the excellent songs in which song-writing was taken seriously as an art form: "The chief sources of good songs, are the miscellany poems and plays from the time of Charles the second to the conclusion of Queen Ann's reign." He was working in London in 1769-70 and moved to Warrington in 1771, and he might have made the acquaintance of the radical publisher, Johnson, during his brief sojourn in London. Brighton, Printed for and Sold by R. Hook, Wholesale Toy and Hawker's Paper Warehouse, 8, Market Street, Brighton, [no date] [c. 1830]. A single broadsheet folio, 245 x 183 mms., printed on one side only; extremities worn and slightly affected by folding, but a good copy. Hood (1799 - 1845) published this in 1820 in The London Magazine. When he reprinted in in Whims and Oddities in 1826, he said of it, "I have never been vainer of any verses than of my part in the following Ballad. Dr. Watts, amongst evangelical nurses, has an enviable renown; and Campbell's Ballads enjoy a snug, genteel popularity. Sally Brown has been favored perhaps with as wide a patronage as the Moral Songs, though its circle may not have been of so select a class as the friends of 'Hohenlinden.' Issued without the music or subscribers' list, as an inexpensive compromise for those who could not afford the more sumptuous editions with the engraved music.

Parkhurst, at the Bible and Three Crowns, at the lower End of Cheap-side near Mercers-Chappel, 1701. 8vo, 51 [52 - 56 adverts]/ 2 volumes in 1, bound in later 18h century sheepskin, rebacked, gilt spine, black label, new end-paper; text a bit foxed and spotted, corners worn. The earliest edition located in ESTC is a seventh edition of 1701. This is ESTC T96339: BL, Bodleian (2), NLS; Minnesota.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo (in 6s), 179 x 103 mms., pp. viii, 244, recently recased in boards, paper label on spine. From the Preface: "There will be found many old Scotch Songs, which have ben rescued from total oblivion; especially many of those composed about the years 1715 and 1745, which are not to be found in any collection whatsoever." The only copies listed in OCLC were two in the National Library of Scotland.

Glasgow, David Robertson...., 1853, 1846. 6 volumes bound in 2. 16mo, 118 x 74 mms., pp. lxxvi, 124 [3] - 124, [3] - 124; xiv, 124, [3] - 182, x, 191 [192 blank], each part with separate paginations, but general title pages dated 1853, with extra woodcut vignette portraits at the front of each volume, and a separate title page to the last part, dated 1846, facsimile signatures of authors in the text, bound in original sage green cloth, stamped in blind to sides and pictorial gilt to spines; a little shaken in casing and cloth slightly faded, but a good set. This is the second collected edition of these works, comprising the first five series of the anthology, together with the supplemental 'Songs for the Nursery', which includes the immortal nursery rhyme 'Wee Willie Winkie'.
