Looks at two brothers from Boston, Lincolnshire (2nd Lieut. Geoffrey Staniland and his brother Capt. Meaburn Staniland of the 1/4th Lincolnshire Regiment) who were killed in Belgium on 14th April and 29th June 1915. Signed and inscribed by the author to original owner on title page "For .... , best wishes, Martin Middlebrook". 144pp, b&w illustrations throughout.. Inscribed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. He was the first Commando soldier in the British Army and led 3 Commando, taking part in raids on Norway and Dieppe and later in Sicily and Italy and then the Normandy Landings and onwards to Germany. An account by a German soldier from Wurttemberg who served in the French army in Poland, Austria, and in Russia in 1812, surviving the Retreat from Moscow. Letters sent by Ralph Verney, an officer in the Rifle Brigade, to his family from South Africa during the Boer War, Australia where he was ADC to the Governor of Queensland, and from France 1914-15, where he was wounded at Neuve Chapelle. Deals with the 1916 Battle of Jutland based on British and German accounts up-to-date (at the time of writing) research. The author is the grandson of Admiral Jellicoe. Top corner of f/ep has been cut out (probably had a previous owner's name on), binding split inside back cover and at half-title, folding map of Lhasa and b&w plate at p331 is loose but still present, last (blank) page also loose but still present, a tear to one of the folds of the map inside back cover. But otherwise a not too bad copy, with all the maps and plates present, of this hard-cover book. Contains numerous pieces by the author about his life, all printed in poetry-style stanzas, but really just normal prose. He was born in a part of the Ukraine which was occupied by Poland up to 1939 when the area was ''Liberated'' by the Soviets, in 1941 he was taken to Germany as a ''voluntary'' worker, taken into the German Army in 1944 and joining the British in 1945. 195pp.. Shrewsbury: Airlife Publishing, 1997. A very good clean tight copy in similar, unclipped dustwrapper of this hard-cover book. The WW1 diaries and letters of Norman Ellison, edited by David R Lewis. The author served in the 6th (Rifle) Battalion, Kings Liverpool Regiment from 1914 onwards, serving in Belgium and France in 1915-17 before being invalided Home. The diaries were never published, but he thought of doing so in the late 1920s, and wrote to many people asking whether or not to do so. These letters are also printed in the book. In later life he was quite well-known as the nature expert ''Nomad'' on BBC radio programme ''Childrens Hour''. 158pp, numerous b&w illustrations.. First Edition. Hard Cover.
