London: The Adventurers Club, 1959. Adventurers Club edition. Some creasing to edges of unclipped dustwrapper, a couple of scratches to front panel and a scuff-mark to back, minor bumping to spine ends of green boards, but otherwise a good clean tight copy of this hard-cover book. Originally published in 1958, this is a later, undated "Adventurers Club" edition, probably from a year or so later. The author's account, as told to a Roland Goodchild, of his travels in Baluchistan (now part of Pakistan) and Afghanistan in pursuit of a Baluchi gang who were stealing weapons and ammunition from British military depots. Very slight creasing to the edges of unclipped dustwrapper, some yellowing to outer pages, some of the illustrated pages have been stuck together at the edges and pulled apart, with some damage to outer edges of pages but not to the illustrations themselves, but otherwise a good clean tight copy of this hard-cover book. Deals with the experiences of British women in India during the Indian Mutiny (are we still allowed to call it that ?) of 1857, including those at Lucknow during the siege, at Cawnpore (there were a few survivors of the famous massacre), and elsewhere. 298pp, 34 b&w illustrations.. Calcutta: Thacker, Spink & Co (1933) Ltd., 1942. Original (not facsimile) dustwrapper has a 3 inch tear to the top right-hand corner of front panel and a smaller, 2 inch one at the top end of spine, and some smaller tears and creasing to the edges of dustwrapper. Minor bumping to spine ends and corners of blue boards, an old price (16 rupees which would have been 21/4 sterling, or just over a guinea, so quite expensive back then) in pencil at top corner of f/ep and original (or a slightly later) owner's gift message dated August 1946 on same page. An encylopaedic dictionary with around 2500 entries on aspects of mythology, religion, folklore, philosophy, literature and history of Hinduism. 372pp.. Paperback. New York: Columbia University Press, 1941. Slipcase is quite worn, with the lower side being missing, the top part of inner (closed) side torn, and wear to the corners of the outer (open) side. The book itself has minor bumping to spine ends and corners, an old price in pencil on f/ep (66 rupees 8 annas which would have equated to £4 8/8 at the time), but otherwise a good clean tight copy of this hard-cover book. Looks at the hand- and arm-gestures (hasta prana and samyita) used in classical Indian dance and their meaning. The author, originally from Texas and called Russell Meriwether Hughes, studied dance in India in the 1930s. 100pp, over 200 b&w illustrations showing the different gestures. Also includes a small leaflet for a performance of Indian dance, no date but would be just post WW2.. Hard Cover. Good/Fair. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

London: Cassell, 1948. No dustwrapper, some bumping to spine ends and corners of yellow boards, slight fading to the spine but black titles thereon are still clear, otherwise a not too bad, tight copy of this hard-cover novel. The author (original name was Florence May Collings) wrote many light romantic novels over thirty-odd years, many set in India, though this one is set in England in the early 1940s. I suspect this must have been one of her last, as she died in 1947. 375pp.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

New Delhi: Matrix Books, 2001. Minor creasing to edges of unclipped dustwrapper, a small ink-mark inside front board, otherwise a good clean tight copy of this hard-cover book. The author claims that the prohibition of beef and the sacredness of cows did not exist in Hinduism in earlier times. A hugely controversial book in India, the book was issued with a new preface in the UK as "The Myth of the Holy Cow". 183pp.. Hard Cover. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Some fading to edges of (mostly) front board, but gilt lines to the edge of front board and gilt titles on spine are still bright. Some foxing to outer pages, but otherwise a good clean tight copy of this hard-cover book. Originally published in March 1898, but with many errors, the book was issued with the corrections in this "Silver Library" edition in January 1899 (1440 copies), with a reprint in February 1901 (1000 copies of which 337 sold). The endpapers in this copy have the swan and ship motif with the date 1726, which was used with the first edition, other copies have 1724. A biography of Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, who wrote many novels and short stories in Hindustani (Hindi) under the name Premchand between the early 1900s and his death in the 1930s.
