The item was sent by John Jenkins to his best customers and friends. Jenkins was a prominent Texas antiquarian bookseller and high stakes gambler, as well as a suspected arsonist and forger. His body was found in a river in 1989 with a gunshot wound in the back of his head. A recent biography of Jenkins by Michael Vinson, Bluffing Texas Style, has been published by the Univ.
