Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.(Signed By Author, First Edition) For nearly a century, Japanese writers gave voice to the anxieties of a nat ion headed inexorably toward war. Not just any war, but one that in the min ds of many would eventually--and inevitably--take place with Japan's neighb or across the Pacific, the United States. In the wake of U.S. Navy Commodore Matthew C. Perry's first visit to Japan with his Black Ships in 1853, Japanese novelists and military analysts, alo ng with a few foreign counterparts, produced a dizzying array of prophetic visions of this coming conflict, creating a massive body of popular works t hrough which Japan would debate its own passage, however violent, into the modern, globalized era. U.S.A.: University of California Pre, 2001. Hardback. Very Good/Very Good. A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. This model monograph is the first scholarly study to put the Ainu the nativ e people living in Ezo, the northernmost island of the Japanese archipelago at the center of an exploration of Japanese expansion during the seventeen th and eighteenth centuries, the height of the Tokugawa shogunal era. Inspi red by "new Western" historians of the United States, Walker positions Ezo not as Japan's northern "frontier" but as a borderland or middle ground. By framing his study between the cultural and ecological worlds of the Ainu b efore and after two centuries of sustained contact with the Japanese, the a uthor demonstrates with great clarity just how far the Ainu were incorporat ed into the Japanese political economy and just how much their ceremonial a nd material life not to mention… Read More

Description:
US: University of Hawaii Press, 2013. Hardcover. Good/Very Good. What are we to make of contemporary newspapers in Japan speculating about t he possible connection between aquatic creatures and earthquakes? Of a city council deciding to issue evacuation advice based on observed animal behav ior? Why, between 1977 and 1993, did Japan's government spend taxpayer mone y to observe catfish in aquariums as part of its mandate to fund earthquake prediction research? All of these actions are direct legacies of the 1855 Ansei Edo earthquake, one of the major natural disasters of the period. In his investigation of the science, politics, and lore of seismic events in J apan, Gregory Smits examines this earthquake in a broad historical context. The Ansei Edo earthquake shook the shogun's capital during a year of special religious significance and at a time of particularly vigorous seismic activity. It was also a turning point because, according to the prevailing understanding of earthquakes at the time, it… Read More
