Description:
Hardcover published by Modern Library, 1942. Collection of four plays; The Children's Hour, Days To Come, The Little Foxes, and Watch on The Rhine. Identifying first Modern Library copies can be tricky since the copy right page is generally not updated with each edition. Toledano binding style #8 - with the torchbearer figure below the title field on the front cover board. This one does appear to be the first though as there was just the one edition before the volume was updated with two additional plays in 1960 - The Autumn Garden, and Another Part of The Forest. 5" X 7-1/8", 330 pages. The green cloth covered boards are flat, bottom right corner is worn and exposed, the remaining corner tips are just slightly worn. One word written on the first flyleaf - appears to be the name 'Tom'. No further writing besides that though, no writing on the text pages. Edges of the text block are relatively clean with wear appropriate for the age of the book. The green colored top-stain does appear to be slightly…

Smaller format hardcover, published by Modern Library, 1929. No dust jacket. Identifying the firsts of Modern Library editions can be tricky. Considering that this copy has the somewhat flexible 'leatherette' style cover, with the pebbled texture to the cover - which was in use from 1925 to 1929, this is most likely a first edition of this Modern Library version. It also has the Bernhard end papers too. First published in 1859, the classic story of how Sir Austin Feverel attempts to educate his son, Richard, according to theories of sexual restraint. 592 pages, 4-1/4" X 6-5/8". No dust jacket. All lettering on the spine is intact and legible. The attached photos are of the copy we have in our inventory.
