Lightly rubbed at corners and spine ends, with upper forecorner tips slightly bumped. There is a small pull mark, some glue remains, and a pen streak on the front free endpaper. Otherwise, the inside pages are clean and unmarked with slight age toning. Dustwrapper has some wear to the corners and head of the spine. The folds are bit rubbed. It is not price clipped. Both boards have a little rubbing and soil. Scuffing on front free endpaper. Frontispiece is missing. Slip case has one smudge mark and a couple of light scratches. A selection of the fables of Jean Fontaine, who collected these tales from around the world and translated them into French in the 17th century. This selection includes charming illustrations of the animals from the stories by British artist Marie Angel. The text is in French and there is a separate English translation booklet included. .

A reproduction of a 19th century edition of Aesop's fables with coloured woodcuts by Charles H. Bennett. Also includes additional 19th century black and white drawings of Randolph Caldecott. .

Both boards are quite dirty, with what appears to be wiping marks, particularly to the lower board. Inside the endpapers are foxed and discoloured and the rear free is partially detached. The title and inside pages have some soil with one leaf having a few tiny pin prick size punctures. A selection of twenty fables from Aesop as translated by Alfred C. Caldecott and illustrated in pen and ink by his brother Randolph Caldecott. Engraving by J.D. Cooper. The book has the bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper of Francis J. Shepherd, who was an professor of Anatomy and Emeritus Dean of Medicine at McGill University, and the former president of the Canadian Medical Association. .
