The tale opens with a gathering of residents at Wallencamp school-house, "Aunt Sibylla was not sporting, now, in the airy realms of metaphor. Aunt Sybylla stood upon Cape Cod, and her voice rang out...the precariousness of her situation, too, was expressed in the wild, alarming, though graceful gestures of her arms". When she speaks, the quotes are in the dialect and rhythm of her era.
