Beginning Logic

By Lemmon, E.J.

UK: Chapman and Hall/CRC, 1992. Paperback. Very Good. 14.6 x 1.9 x 22.2 cm. Slight damage to top r/h corner. The aim of this book is to provide an exposition of elementary formal logic. The course, which is primarily intended for first-year students who have no previous knowledge of the subject, forms a working basis for more advanced reading and is presented in such a way as to be intelligible to the layman. The nature of logic is examined with the gradual introduction of worked samples showing how to distinguish the sound statement from the unsound. Arguments whose soundness cannot be proved by propositional calculus are discussed, and it is shown how formalization can reveal the logical form of arguments. The final section of the book deals with the application of the predicate calculus as applied in various other fields of logic. Synopsis Providing an exposition of elementary formal logic, this book is primarily intended for first-year students who have no previous knowledge of the subject.

Efficient Parallel Algorithms

By Gibbons, Alan;Rytter, Wojciech

Cambridge Univ Press, 1989. Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 6.75" x 9.75. P/B 259 pages, condition is very good. This text is an introduction to the field of efficient parallel algorithms and to techniques for efficient parallelisation. It is largely self-contained and presumes no special knowledge of parallel computers or particular mathematics. The emphasis of the book is on designing algorithms within the timeless and abstracted context of a high-level programming language rather than depending on highly specific computer architectures. This approach concentrates on the essence of algorithmic theory, and on determining and taking advantage of the inherently parallel nature of certain types of problem. The authors present regularly used techniques and a range of algorithms which includes some of the more celebrated. The text is targeted at non-specialists who are considering entering the field of parallel algorithms. It will be particularly useful for courses aimed at advanced undergraduate or new postgraduate students of computer science and mathematics.

Mathematics for Ecologists

By Chaston, Ian

Butterworths, 1971. Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 5.5" X 8.5. P/B 132 pages, condition is very good, minor edge wear. The growing awareness of the pressing problems of future world food supplies and the dangers of uncontrolled pollution have caused society to demand that ecologists produce immediate answers on the mechanisms which control animals and their environments. These answers can usually only be obtained by applying the tools of systems analysis and computers, and therefore the current texts and research papers on ecology often contain complex mathematical arguments. Unfortunately many biologists receive only a very brief coverage of mathematics during their training and consequently often have difficulty in fully assessing the validity of the conclusions presented in modern research. The purpose of this book is to introduce the basic principles underlying the application of such techniques as calculus, matrices, and linear programming in order that the reader may then at least comprehend the rationale of the equations being currently proposed as the quantitative descriptions of ecological phenomena. Throughout the text, the mathematics is presented by using it to solve ecological examples readily identifiable to the reader, thus establishing a direct biological application for the theories being taught. This approach will be both helpful and interesting to the reader, providing him with a substantial background in mathematics and encouraging him to use the subject in his own work. Thus this book will be of real practical value to all ecologists and biologists, at both student and professional level.

Instrumental Variables

By Bowden, Roger J.; Turkington, D. A.

Cambridge, 1990. Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 6" x 9. P/B 227 pages, condition is very good. Recent advances in establishing the nature and scope of estimators in econometrics have shed more light on the importance of instrumental variables. In this book, Professors Bowden and Turkington argue that such methods may be regarded as a strong organizing principle for a wide variety of estimation and hypothesis-testing problems in econometrics and statistics. In support of this claim they present and develop the methodology of instrumental variables in its most general and explanatory form. They show, for instance, that techniques commonly used to handle simultaneity and related problems can be reduced to one of two generic varieties of instumental variables estimators, allowing them to further explore the conditions under which different proposed estimators are efficient. The instrumental variable techniques presented are clearly illustrated and applied to a range of different problems, both linear and nonlinear. This book will be useful for advanced undergraduates and graduates, and be a source of reference for researchers in econometrics and statistics.
