First published in 1824 and subsequently compared to Burton's Arabian Nights, this classic is reprinted in a new edition with exquisite color illustrations, as well as line drawings, by Cyrus LeRoy Baldridge, who traveled throughout Persia (modern day Iran) to retrace the journeys of Hajji himself. The book includes a Foreword by Christopher Morley. This First Edition Thus has the 1937 date on the copyright page, as well as on the Title Page in Roman Numerals. Random House did not state First Edition on its earlier books until 30 years later, but only made note of subsequent printings. The book is bound in a woven red cloth, with gilt spine lettering. There is a discreet embossment from a former owner. The binding is tight and secure. With the exception of a modern Introduction by Mark Helprin, the book is a facsimile of the original 1909 hardcover and features the Kate Douglas Wiggin text as well as the 12 full-page color Maxfield Parrish illustrations. Although no publisher or date of publication is listed, this mammoth book was probably published between 1887 and 1890. Other copies I've been able to locate are of English origin, and this one is probably as well. It was sold only by subscription. The hundreds of Victorian illustrations of historic interest and portraits make this volume a fascinating collectible. The book measures 8 1/4 by 11 inches and includes 480 pages. It has a shipping weight of 7 pounds and, thus, is restricted to domestic, U.S. shipping only since international shipping costs would be prohibitively expensive. Even so, domestic Media Mail shipping will require extra shipping costs. The book is bound in a deep green cloth that shows rubbing, edge fraying, and shelf wear. The story deals with a 12th century Japanese hero, Kiyomori, who rises from poverty and obscurity to become the Emperor's Chief Councillor at a time of political intrigue and great corruption in the imperial city of Kyoto. This is also a story of two warrior clans and ancient enemies to one another, the Heiké and the Genji. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1864. The vast collection of poetry, from classical times up to 1857, when the book was first published, is in Good + condition. It comes from a private college library and library markings are on the rear endpaper, with a tucked-in library card having only one date, January, 1935. The book is tightly bound in a library binding. The top spine cloth is rubbed, and the bottom spine cloth is missing about 3/4 of an inch. (Click on photo). This Ninth Edition was published in 1864. The book includes an Index of Authors and an Index according to subject matter. The rebinder has mixed up the order of some of the Index pages, six of which are edge-taped and one of which is missing a corner. Despite the 1945 copyright date, the book was published during the 1950s for the Walter J. Black Classics Club. What's remarkable is the New condition, as if the book had been published yesterday and not over half a century ago. I would assume it had probably been boxed and placed in storage since its original purchase. These classic works by Marcus Aurelius, Lucian, Justin Martyr, and Walter Pater include an Introduction by Irwin Edman. The book measures 5 1/2 by 7 11/16 inches and includes 306 pages.
