Philadelphia: Theodore Fresser The author of this book remains anonymous (unless Theodore Fresser is both publisher and author). Nor is a publishing date provided, but the book is signed and dated April 6, 1907 by its original owner on the front free endpaper, so it was probably published in 1906 or 1907. According to the author's Introduction, the Dresden Opera House had burned to the ground about four years earlier, and the destruction included various manuscripts. Among these was the only score of Josquin Dorioz' opera "Alcestis." Since the music itself could not be restored, the book is actually a novelization of this lost opera and how Dorioz came to write it. This is probably the first and only edition. Thus, it is a most unusual collectible for opera admirers. The book is in Very Good condition, with beige cloth covers, black borders, and die-stamped gilt titles on the front panel and spine. Fisher Unwin in London from the early 1890s through the early 1900s. The Marlowe volume contains a frontis illustration. The collection was edited by Havelock Ellis and includes a Marlowe biography by Ellis as well, with an Introduction by J.A. Symonds. The plays include Tambulaine the Great (in two parts), The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, The Jew of Malta, and Edward the Second. An Appendix includes relevant items, such as a short biography of Edward Alleyn, who performed in many of Marlowe's plays. Originally published in 1906, this Glyn novel was reprinted in 1922 to promote the silent film starring Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson, photographs of whom are used as illustrations. There is also a frontis photo of Valentino and Elinor Glyn. A young, penniless aristocrat, Theodora (Gloria Swanson), marries a self-made millionaire grocer to help her family recover economically. But sure enough, she meets a playboy aristocrat (Rudolph Valentino) and falls for him. Which will win? Honor and duty? Or love? After this book had gone into its second printing, the secondary rights were sold to the World Publishing Company, a 1940s reprint house, whose books generally used poor quality, highly acidic paper, which resulted in serious page browning issues.
