"Cloth of the Tempest" is as varied as Kenneth Patchen's moods and methods of expression. He offers love lyrics full of the warmth of life, moving commentaries on war and his experiments with poems-in-drawings-and-type which introduced a new medium. Patchen has something to say and he's not afraid to say it with power and sincerity. Patchen's biographer wrote that he "developed in his fabulous fables, love poems, and picture poems a deep yet modern mythology that conveys a sense of compassionate wonder amidst the world's violence." Along with his friend and peer Kenneth Rexroth, he was a central influence over the San Francisco Renaissance and the Beat Generation.

None of these 60 short pieces were previously published before this collection appeared. Kenneth Patchen is one of those unclassifiable writers--his poetry and prose have a wild kind of purity to them that is hard to explain or ignore. Patchen is a fabulist, a humorist (in a some what dark vein), a surrealist, and a dedicated experimentalist who refuses to be categorized. These fables reflect the myriad aspects of his talent fresh approach to the written word.

Merwin's early subjects were frequently tied to mythological or legendary themes, while many of his poems featured animals. In the mid-fifties, he joined the circle of writers that surrounded Robert Lowell and Merwin decided to seek a more American vernacular. He turned inward, toward more introspective and personal subjects. At this time he also began experimenting with form and irregular metrics. This is Merwin's third book of poetry printed from the UK plates.

Blazek was an early supporter of Bukowski and a poet in his own write. He was the editor of "Ole" magazine which published many of Bukowski's early poems. This chapbook contains six poems.

A writer for the New York Times Book Review wrote that in Kenneth Patchen "there is the voice of anger—outspoken rage against the forces of hypocrisy and injustice in our world. Patchen sees man as a creature of crime and violence, a fallen angel who is haunted by all the horrors of the natural world, and who still continues to kill his own kind: 'Humanity is a good thing. Perhaps we can arrange the murder of a sizable number of people to save it.'"

This selection of Bukowski's poetry is most drawn from his early chapbooks and his two books published by the Loujon Press. The twenty-five poems represent some of his strongest work from the 60's.
