An early contribution to the question of proposing an ending to Dickens' last unfinished work. Pasted to endpapers and blank prelims are letters written to the Editor of the Times [London] in 1919 concerning the true identity of Datchery. The first of these is by A.E. Taylor of the University of St. Andrews, the British idealist philosopher most famous for his contributions to the philosophy of idealism in his writings on metaphysics, the philosophy of religion, moral philosophy, and the scholarship of Plato. A second contribution is made by Arthur Pinero, an English actor and later an important dramatist and stage director. Both take exception to Times editorial by a Mr. Rolleston purporting to identify Datchery. Some toning to end-papers, else a clean, square, unmarked copy. Matz, editor of "The Dickensian", with an introduction by Kate Perugini, Charles Dickens daughter. Wonderfully illustrated by Harold Copping with 30 full page color plates, all with original tissue guards intact. Other illustrations include frontispiece portait of Dickens, engraved by Armytage, from a portrait taken in America (by Guerney, 1867). A second portrait of a younger Dickesns and 2 facsimiles.
